Department Summary

The Construction Management Internship Program is geared toward current college students who have a passion for construction management and an interest in Consumers Energy and the energy industry.  The Internship Program at Consumers Energy has core principles of skill development, ability enhancement, and knowledge application – experience designed to be complimentary to traditional classroom instruction.

 

Job Description/Responsibilities

The selected intern will assist a site Construction Manager with daily logs, review of specifications, schedule updates, quality assurance, print reviews, contract review, scope review, and implementation of the project out in the field.

 

In addition to working alongside full time employees carrying out the construction management functions for Consumers Energy, Interns will have the option to participate in a number of additional optional events within the program, including intern networking events, company tours, and the consistently top-ranked event, The Intern Challenge.

Requirements/Qualifications

  • Actively enrolled in a bachelors or master’s degree program in; Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Mechanical engineering or related
  • The minimum GPA requirement for this internship is 2.7

  • Familiar with drawings , P&ID’s (ask for more detail)
  • General knowledge of specification books
  • Understanding contract language
  • Working knowledge of schedules

     

Location of the internship may vary depending upon assignment and travel within the State of Michigan may be required. Potential locations may include: Muskegon River, Essexville or West Olive.

Essential Functions

Planning, design, construction, and maintenance of Electric and Gas Generation systems as well as facilities and ancillary support process for all utility operations.  Duties and who this individual reports to will fluctuate between projects, Practice Areas, and offices. Individual possesses the skills to lead, problem solve, and work well in a team environment.  Individual should exemplify safe work practices and follow the company’s compliance standards.  Lead and/or assist with energy related construction projects to include plans, specifications, reports, contracts, schedules, estimates, forecasts, data collection, construction observation, and field investigation.  Provide cost and schedule services with accuracy, integrating all applicable governmental and company laws, standards and procedures on time and under budget. Understand and follow company established standard procedures for file structure and standard drawing procedures for projects  Become familiar with plans and specifications, maps, and related material for each project and be able to utilize the information appropriately.  Assists in client contact and communication.  Utilize effective oral and written communication skills to provide technical expertise to coworkers, clients, customers, government entities and the public.  Public involvement may include producing reports, graphics, presentations, and other visual material as well as occasional speaking or meeting with stakeholders. Attend internal and external meetings.  Provide all project controls services in a legal and ethical manner. Reviews operating and construction sites to monitor progress and other duties per the design documents.

 

Hours and Travel

This position requires the individual to typically work 40 hours per week with 85% of time spent in the office or specific field locations. Travel is required to job sites and project meetings and could be significant dependent upon location.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. The noise level on the construction site is often loud.

Position will be filled at the appropriate salary grade based upon the skills, knowledge, and experience of the selected candidate.
