Location: J.H. Campbell Generating Complex – West Olive, MI
Schedule: 24/7 first, second, third shifts (nights, weekends, holidays required)
Position Summary
Under directive supervision, the Environmental Operator operates, monitors, and inspects environmental control and support equipment within a power generation facility. This role supports safe, compliant, and efficient plant operations while assisting other operators as required.
Primary Job Duties
This position is responsible for operating and maintaining environmental systems critical to plant operations, including but not limited to:
- Operating, monitoring, and inspecting environmental equipment such as atomizers, vessels, pumps, compressors, dust and byproduct disposal systems, lime and slurry systems, chillers, feeders, activated carbon injection equipment, batteries, and breakers using digital control systems and programmable logic controls (PLCs).
- Taking equipment readings, observing operating conditions, and recording data in electronic logbooks during assigned shifts.
- Submitting electronic work requests for identified equipment deficiencies.
- Performing minor equipment repairs and replacements, including valve packing adjustments (under 200 PSI), replacing sight glasses, indication lamps, and lighting necessary for safe job performance.
- Conducting environmental equipment housekeeping in plant buildings and associated grounds.
- Preparing and performing mechanical and electrical clearance orders using software systems or prints and P&IDs.
- Performing lime quality analysis testing.
- Cleaning, lubricating, and painting equipment as required.
- Performing other similar and related duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- High school diploma or GED
- Demonstrated aptitude and capacity to perform duties of higher‑rated jobs within the occupational group.
- Working knowledge of environmental plant equipment and the practical principles of operating simple machinery.
- Ability to understand and follow plant operating procedures and safety requirements.
- Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE), including respirators (PAPR, half‑mask, full‑face), chemical protection suits, gloves, boots, and face shields.
- Minimum of six (6) months of experience in the occupational group or equivalent experience.
- Successful completion of the POSS (Plant Operator Selection System) assessment prior to employment
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs occasionally.
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, crouch, and sit throughout the workday.
- Constant ability to see, hear, read, and communicate clearly.
- Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold.
- Ability to maintain focus, learn continuously, and exercise sound judgment in an industrial environment.
- Regular, on‑site attendance is required; this position is not eligible for remote work.
Work Environment
- Industrial plant environment with occasional exposure to noise, chemicals, and machinery.
- Use of motor vehicles and machinery as required.
- Compliance with all safety, environmental, and regulatory requirements.
