Auxiliary Operator (Union Position)
Location: J.H. Campbell Generating Complex – West Olive, MI
Schedule: 24/7 first, second, third shifts (nights, weekends, holidays required)
About the J.H. Campbell Generating Complex
The J.H. Campbell Generating Complex is located in West Olive, Michigan, along the eastern shore of Lake Michigan between Holland and Grand Haven. The facility plays a critical role in meeting the energy needs of more than 1.8 million electric customers.
Our Operations Department is responsible for the safe, reliable operation of three large electric generating units that operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The Campbell Complex offers excellent facilities, highfidelity training simulators, and robust training programs designed to develop skilled power plant operators.
Position Summary
Under direct supervision, the Auxiliary Operator supports the safe and efficient operation of power plant systems and equipment. This role assists principal operators and performs a wide range of operational, inspection, and maintenancerelated tasks in a continuousoperation power generation environment.
Key Responsibilities

Operate, clean, lubricate, and monitor auxiliary power plant equipment, including oil purification systems, cooling equipment, heat exchangers, and environmental systems

Assist with operation and inspection of pulverizers, boiler feed makeup systems, and air, gas, and liquid piping systems

Operate and tag disconnect switches, oil circuit breakers, station power circuits, and other manually operated substation equipment

Perform equipment tagging for systems removed from service

Take required readings and record operational data

Adjust and repack pump and valve packing as directed

Conduct visual inspections of indoor and outdoor substation equipment, batteries, motor generator sets, and related systems

Operate and monitor hydrogen gas systems and record pressures as required

Inspect and maintain plant fire protection equipment

Perform other related duties as assigned in support of plant operations
Essential Functions
-
Demonstrate safe work practices and strict adherence to all company safety standards and procedures
-
Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, to log plant status and collaborate with coworkers in a teambased environment
Required Qualifications
-
High School Diploma or GED
-
One (1) or more years of maintenance and/or operations experience in a power plant, industrial facility, or similar environment
-
Ability and willingness to work first, second, and third shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime
-
Successful completion of the POSS (Plant Operator Selection System) assessment prior to employment
Preferred Qualifications
-
Military or civilian experience in power generation, turbine room operations, boiler room operations, or wastewater/sewage treatment facilities

Ability to successfully complete a Personnel Risk Assessment (PRA) background check in compliance with NERC regulations
Hours and Travel
-
Minimum of 40 hours per week in a continuous 24/7 operation

Overtime and additional hours may be required based on operational needs

Minimal travel may be required for training or companysponsored events
Physical Demands and Work Environment
This position requires the ability to:

Sit, stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl

Traverse the power plant to inspect and operate equipment

Meet vision requirements including close vision, color vision, depth perception, and focus adjustment

Work in environments where temperatures may exceed 100°F and where outdoor work is subject to weather conditions
