Summary

As a Gas Field Leader (Capital Projects) in Gas Transmission Operations, you will be responsible for partnering capital opportunities with our operations team throughout various locations to ensure we reach a target capital workload as well as on time delivery. The selected candidate will also be responsible for construction activities, including reading and interpreting engineering drawings and schematics, pipeline integrity, welding procedures and practices, as well as leading team preparation and execution of Capital Projects. Additionally, you will partner with operations in the safe and productive execution of the Gas Maintenance and Construction plans, including Gas Pipeline, M&R, Storage, and Well Service facilities.

 

Job Responsibilities

The selected candidate must be able to collaborate with peers and supporting departments to create/maintain a work environment that supports each other to reach common goals of safety and health initiatives, compliance programs, and productivity. Key responsibilities include, but not limited to:

 

  • Partner in building a process of continuous improvement by aligning and further identifying capital opportunities with Operations and Planning to ensure a desired capital workload is achieved as well as on time delivery.
  • Support fellow field leaders with Capital Project outage procedure reviews, walkdowns, execution, and turn over.
  • Seek opportunities to reduce/save O&M thru capital design input.
  • Provide direct or indirect support to fellow field leadership who supervise 8 to 15 union employees and participate in supervisory on-call responsibilities.
  • Leading and providing technical expertise to Gas Operation and Maintenance field employees.
  • Interacting with internal and external customers.
  • Directing work activities to meet established work plans and objectives.
  • Plan and facilitate team and department safety meetings.
  • Motivate, team-build and problem solve in a competitive business environment by continually encouraging sound employee decision-making.
  • Utilize strong communication skills and the ability to negotiate sensitive issues.
  • Develop strong working relationships with Local Union officials.
  • Provide strong leadership while promoting safe work behaviors. Record safety and quality site visits
  • Willingness to be on-call on a regular basis and work unusual hours through unplanned events is required.
  • Responsible for managing successful and cost effective headquarter business operations.
  • Work may also involve managing and monitoring work performed by non-company employees.
  • Ability to work with planning and scheduling to ensure an executable work plan.

 

Requirements/Qualifications:

  • A High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
  • 3 years’ experience in gas transmission, gas distribution, gas construction, gas service, or gas compression and storage; OR
  • 3 years’ experience in underground utility operations (e.g., Gas, Electric, Water, Sewer); OR
  • 3 years’ experience as a Consumers Energy field operations field leader (i.e., Electric, Fleet, Facilities, Meter Reading); OR

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology or other applicable technical field with 2 years’ experience in one of the above listed areas.
  • A strong knowledge of the working agreement, safe work practices and previous supervisory and demonstrated leadership experience.
  • Knowledge of safe work practices and procedures.
  • Natural gas utility experience with a strong mechanical background in maintenance of gas Transmission facilities.
  • Construction or Project management experience.
  • Computer based skills such as SAP and Microsoft Office.

 

Essential Functions

Responsible for delivery, planning, organization, and coordination of Capital Projects within Transmission Operations as well as supporting fellow field leadership with supervision of employees assigned to the operation, maintenance and construction of buildings and grounds or utility support areas. Recommends proposed changes and enhancements to systems and facilities operation, responds to complaints and requests for information, prepares and maintains reports of completed job orders and the status of jobs in progress. Inspects job sites to check on work progress, assure satisfactory completion and plans new assignments, prepares requisitions for operations and maintenance supplies, equipment and materials and supervises special projects as required. Conducts regular safety meetings, participates as a member of safety committee; investigates and completes necessary incident reports and accident reports; maintains records, prepares and submits required reports for appropriate agencies. Assists in creation and implements preventative maintenance programs. Works with project engineers, project managers, and construction managers to develop executable projects. Drives and maintains a safety culture.

 

Hours and Travel

This position requires the individual to work a minimum of 40 hours per week with a majority of the time spent in the office or specific field locations. Individual needs to be willing to work additional hours as necessary to meet deadlines or assist with gas emergent activities and could be given very short notice to do so. Individual should be willing to participate in the on-call rotation in case of potential after hour emergencies. Individual may have to work outside of assigned headquarters to help with gas emergencies which may require overnight stays. Could potentially work a flexible schedule to meet the demands of the customer, which may include evenings, overnights, weekends, holidays and overtime. Individual must have a valid driver’s license.
