Location: This is a hybrid (virtual/onsite) position with required onsite days on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday and may be assigned to any Consumers Energy Service Center located throughout Michigan's lower Peninsula.  The selected candidate must be within a commutable distance or willing to relocate (relocation package is available for those that qualify). 

General Summary of Job Responsibilities

The Senior Electrical Engineer is responsible for the engineering and design efforts that support the sustainable operation of the company’s distribution, generation, and storage systems. This role involves collaboration with internal teams and external stakeholders, leadership of complex technical projects, and oversight of junior engineers and technicians as needed.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform a broad range of engineering tasks using computer-aided design (CAD) and engineering software and equipment
  • Ensure compliance with specifications, codes, and customer requirements by directing or coordinating installation, manufacturing, construction, maintenance, documentation, support, and testing activities
  • Prepare specifications for the procurement of electrical equipment and materials; estimate material, labor, and construction costs for budget planning
  • Ensure installations and operations meet standards and customer requirements by preparing electrical system specifications, technical drawings, and topographical maps; investigate and resolve project issues promptly
  • Design, control, and implement electrical systems and products
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for clients regarding electrical engineering project matters
  • Manage the development and implementation of electrical systems
  • Design, maintain, implement, and improve electrical instruments, facilities, components, equipment, and systems for industrial, commercial, or residential use
  • Collaborate with customers, colleagues, and stakeholders to discuss current or potential engineering projects; monitor project progress and budgets; prepare reports for senior management
  • Write technical reports and compile data related to current and potential electrical engineering projects and studies; provide technical support to other departments as needed
  • Lead project engineering and design efforts
  • Provide field technical support
  • Participate in special projects such as specification ownership and process change management
  • Perform other duties as assigned or required

Additional Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Automate tasks and conduct statewide distribution studies in CYME using Python
  • Continuously improve data quality within distribution planning models
  • Represent the company in industry user groups to influence CYME software development and application
  • Research and evaluate emerging software tools to drive innovation in modeling and planning processes
  • Provide technical modeling and software support across multiple departments
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to test, validate, and deploy new versions of CYME and related applications
  • Deliver user training and develop standard work documentation for CYME
  • Participate in requirements gathering and specification development for engineering software procurement
  • Serve as system product owner for the company’s line sensor database
  • Prepare technical reports utilizing data sourced from Access, TimeSeries/PI, SQL, and GIS databases

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Proficiency in design and calculation software
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Solid understanding of electric utility distribution planning, construction, operation, and maintenance
  • Working knowledge of electric utility operations, including generation, transmission, and distribution of three-phase alternating current power
  • Familiarity with distribution planning principles is a plus
  • Knowledge of applicable codes and standards related to electrical engineering
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities

Education/Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited program with four (4) or more years of experience in an advanced electrical engineering capacity
    • [OR] Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from a non-ABET accredited program plus a Professional Engineering license with four (4) or more years of experience in an advanced electrical engineering capacity
