Department Summary

 

The Substation Design & Standards Division are looking to fill two (2) Senior Substation Design Technician positions located in Bay City and Jackson.  All qualified candidates must be located within 60 miles of the Bay City facility OR 60 miles of the Jackson facility.  Both positions work 40 hours a week Monday – Friday with the exception of working storm duty. 

 

This position is within the Substation Design & Standards (SD&S) Division of the High Voltage Distribution (HVD) Engineering Department. The division is responsible for all electric substation layout engineering and design for both high- and low-voltage distribution systems of Consumers Energy. 

 

Job Description/Responsibilities 

 

The Sr Substation Design Technician will complete electrical layout and civil / structural designs for distribution substations of varying complexity utilizing MicroStation CAD software. Most of the employee's work to be completed in office, but some field work is required.  

 

Primary Responsibility of the Position

 

The completion of electric layout, ground grid layout, foundation layout, steel layout & details, conduit layout and site drawings. Material selection will be required. Other duties may include the inspection of electrical substation spill prevention plans for recertification and giving engineering support to internal and external clients for construction projects designed by the employee (by phone or on-site). Additional requirement is to support storm restoration in a designated role.  Position will be filled at the appropriate salary grade based upon the skills, knowledge, and experience of the selected candidate. Technician will be responsible for mentoring less experienced designers.

 

 Requirements/Qualifications

 

  • 6+ years applicable experience.
  • Candidate must possess a two-year associate degree in the requisite scientific or technical field (48 scientific or technical credit hours as measured on a semester basis). Electrical Background (preferred). The 48 scientific or technical credit hours can be obtained through colleges, technical institutes, licensed apprenticeship programs, trade schools, or military programs.
  • Drafting experience is required.
  • MicroStation or CAD etc. 3D drafting experience is preferred. 

 

Essential Functions

  • Analyze and resolve a wide variety of work procedures (which may involve the engineering design, work order preparation, field checking, scheduling coordination, material provisioning and ordering, redlining, preparation of “as-builts,”
  • Mentor less experienced designers, provide design support, track or modify design procedures in accordance with changing design standards.
  • Interact with other internal departments to resolve design related issues, and communicate those issues to others, including management and sister departments.
  • Interpret and analyze a wide variety of complex technical/scientific design projects, perform work coordination, and respond to inquiries from other designers. These tasks involve the evaluation of alternative courses of action, recommending and coordinating the appropriate actions through the work process to meet current substation standards and NESC requirements.
  • Coordinate with employees in other departments and/or external vendors to meet any special requirements for the project.
  • The ideal applicant should exhibit exceptional problem solving and teamwork skills.
  • Possess strong computer skills (Windows, Microsoft Office, SAP) and analytical skills

  • Can interact with internal and external clients to receive and interpret highly advanced information and data
  • Receives reports, electrical diagrams, and correspondence; reviews, processes, or maintains documentation for reference.
  • Consults with manufacturers' electric field lab, construction coordinators contractors, and vendor representatives to discuss problems, and evaluate solutions for necessary parts, or equipment.
  • Performs other related duties as required.  Reviews, edits, develops, manages, and interprets documents and drawings utilized for the purposes of maintaining, constructing, testing, and removing equipment and facilities for CE’s transmission systems.
  • Makes design decisions with regards to electrical, physical mechanical, civil, and structural aspects of equipment. 
  • Consults with supervisors, operators, technicians, manufacturers, vendors, subject matter experts and engineers to review assigned area needs, discuss problems, prioritize work, and provide technical expertise.
