This is a hybrid (virtual/onsite) position with required onsite days on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday and is preferred to be assigned to One Energy Plaza located in Jackson, MI but is open to being assigned to any Consumers Energy Service Center located throughout Michigan's lower Peninsula.  The selected candidate must be within a commutable distance or willing to relocate (relocation package is available for those that qualify). 

General Summary of Job Responsibilities

 

As a member of the Facilities Engineering and Design staff, the Facilities Mechanical Engineer is responsible for all engineering functions required to manage the corporation's mechanical system assets. This includes but is not limited to analysis and design of mechanical systems, consulting, troubleshooting mechanical operating systems, preparation of preventive maintenance procedures, developing performance specifications, system design criteria, mechanical system inspection processes, drawing reviews, and selected construction management duties. This position also includes life cycle cost evaluations, long-term strategic planning support functions, budgeting and scheduling activities, and preparation of annual objectives and work plans.

The Mechanical Engineer contributes to the development, design, and testing of new products and systems. This position collaborates with a multidisciplinary team of engineers, scientists, and technicians on moderately complex projects to ensure compliance with all applicable safety standards and specifications. Responsibilities include conducting mechanical and electromechanical tests on products and systems, performing mechanical testing and maintenance of products in production, and evaluating prototypes.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

 

  • Lead mechanical engineering programs from concept to completion, including design, analysis, testing, and commissioning.
  • Coordinate with cross-functional teams: electrical, civil, architectural, project, and operations.
  • Oversee mechanical design reviews, approvals, and modifications.
  • Ensure compliance with mechanical codes, standards, and safety regulations (ASME, ASTM, ISO, OSHA, local codes).
  • Collaborate with vendors, contractors, and suppliers.
  • Support continuous improvement, reliability, and efficiency initiatives.
  • Develop detailed specifications for the procurement of mechanical equipment and materials, and prepare material, labor, and construction cost estimates for budget planning.
  • Prepare comprehensive reports and compile data related to current and prospective mechanical engineering projects and studies.
  • Oversee and coordinate installation, manufacturing, construction, maintenance, documentation, support, and testing activities to ensure compliance with specifications, codes, and customer requirements.
  • Establish standards and specifications for construction, manufacturing, or installation by performing thorough calculations and analyses.
  • Ensure mechanical system installations and operations meet established standards and customer requirements by preparing technical specifications, drawings, and topographical maps.
  • Collaborate effectively with customers, team members, and other stakeholders to discuss existing or potential engineering products and projects.
  • Execute a variety of engineering tasks utilizing computer-aided design and engineering software and equipment.
  • Design, maintain, implement, and enhance mechanical instruments, facilities, components, equipment, products, and systems for industrial, commercial, or domestic applications.
  • Design, monitor, and implement mechanical systems and products to ensure optimal performance.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned or as necessary.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

 

  • Experience in mechanical systems such as HVAC, piping, plumbing, structural supports, or industrial equipment
  • Strong program management skills
  • Experience leading multidisciplinary teams
  • Knowledge of mechanical design and maintenance best practices
  • Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills
  • Proficiency with CAD software (SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Revit)
  • Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving abilities
  • Strong mechanical and technical aptitude
  • Proficiency with computer-aided design (CAD) software; experience with SolidWorks, Inventor, or Creo preferred
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Thorough understanding of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) principles
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, with the ability to quickly learn new software applications

 

Education and Experience

 

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program with a minimum of two (2) years or experience in mechanical engineering roles

OR

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from a non-ABET accredited program plus a Professional Engineering license with a minimum of two (2) years or experience in mechanical engineering roles
