Location: This is a hybrid (virtual/onsite) position with required onsite days on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday and may be assigned to any Consumers Energy Service Center located throughout Michigan's lower Peninsula. The selected candidate must be within a commutable distance or willing to relocate (relocation package is available for those that qualify).
General Summary of Job Responsibilities
The Mechanical Engineer supports the development, design, and testing of new products and systems. This role collaborates with a multidisciplinary team of engineers, scientists, and technicians on moderately complex projects to ensure compliance with all relevant safety standards and specifications. Responsibilities include testing mechanical and electromechanical products and systems, maintaining mechanical testing processes for production, and evaluating prototypes.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Collaborate with customers, colleagues, and cross-functional teams to discuss current or potential engineering projects and products.
- Perform a variety of engineering tasks using computer-aided design (CAD) and engineering software and equipment.
- Ensure installations and operations meet standards and customer requirements by preparing mechanical system specifications, technical drawings, and topographical maps.
- Oversee or coordinate installation, manufacturing, construction, maintenance, documentation, support, and testing activities to ensure compliance with specifications, codes, and customer expectations.
- Compile data and write reports on current and prospective mechanical engineering projects and studies.
- Prepare specifications for the procurement of mechanical equipment and materials; estimate material, labor, and construction costs for budgeting purposes.
- Design, implement, and manage mechanical systems and products.
- Develop, maintain, and improve mechanical instruments, facilities, components, equipment, or systems for industrial, commercial, or domestic applications.
- Perform detailed calculations to establish construction, manufacturing, or installation standards and specifications.
- Perform other duties as assigned or required.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Solid understanding of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) principles.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Proficient mechanical and technical skills.
- Experience with CAD software such as SolidWorks, Inventor, or Creo.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite with the ability to learn new software quickly.
Education/Experience
- Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited program with two (2) or more years of experience in mechanical engineering roles
- [OR] Bachelor's Degree Engineering from a non-ABET accredited program plus a Professional Engineering license with two (2) or more years of relevant experience in mechanical engineering roles
