The Information Technology (IT) Internship Program is geared toward current college students who have a passion for IT and an interest in Consumers Energy and the energy industry. The IT Internship Program at Consumers Energy has core principles of skill development, ability enhancement, and knowledge application – experience designed to be complimentary to traditional classroom instruction.


What you will do: 


Current college students of all levels will work as part of a larger team to provide hands-on support and development for information technology aspects of internal clients' business. This could include application/software development, networking infrastructure support, governance and compliance analysis, and more – all while helping clients effectively and efficiently utilize information technology resources.

In addition to working alongside full-time employees carrying out the IT strategy for Consumers Energy, IT Interns will have the option to participate in a number of events within the program, including intern networking events, company tours and Intern Challenge.

IMPORTANT NOTE: This posting does not represent a specific position and is posted for the purpose of collecting resumes for students interested in an IT internship opportunity with Consumers Energy. Opportunities could include summer 2023 Internships, fall or spring co-op, part-time year-round co-op, etc.

We encourage you to apply if you possess the following: 


MUST be a current student to be eligible for an Intern role and actively enrolled and pursuing a bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Information Systems, Data Analytics, or other related field. A minimum GPA of 2.7 or higher is required.

  • Prior work experience or internship is preferred
  • Hands-on experience with MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) required
  • Knowledge of MS Outlook is ideal

This role may require reporting to an assigned headquarter on occasion.  Leaders will discuss the work arrangements which best fit the nature of the work along with overall business needs.

Essential Functions

Works closely with department managers and users to define and analyze business and operational problems, process improvement opportunities and requirements; analyzes operational and business mandates and legal requirements; identifies and analyzes complex, ambiguous and/or conflicting business process issues; advises department managers on applications development, enhancement and maintenance issues; explains technology and process options and assists managers in analysis and decision making; analyzes management information needs and recommends data and reporting processes; coordinates the development of department priorities and works within IT to align initiatives to these priorities; facilitates user meetings and joint development sessions. Develops and refines business models and relationship diagrams; evaluates methods of improving efficiency and cost effectiveness of business, technical and operational processes; works with users to reengineer work processes; analyzes functional business requirements and translates user expectations into detailed business requirements, specifications and success criteria; works with Information Systems to develop conceptual proposals for business process automation initiatives; recommends work process and/or operational changes to complement system functionalities; serves as an advocate for department needs with IT; stays abreast of developments in departmental processes to anticipate emerging technology needs. Participates in the development of statements of work for RFPs/RFIs; participates in evaluating vendor applications and solutions; coordinates department review of vendor deliverables for accuracy and completeness, ensuring that department needs and requirements have been met. Develops significant application/hardware solutions to problems and addresses change request issues that require assignment of resources. Analyzes and troubleshoots complex applications problems and errors; takes action or communicates solutions to problems; answers technical questions and provides guidance to users on system functionalities and methods for correcting problems. Develops training materials and handouts; conducts user applications training classes and one-on-one training sessions; develops and maintains user documentation. Designs and generates custom reports and user-defined cabinets to meet user needs. Plans and coordinates the deployment of new technologies for client solutions; coordinates user acceptance testing and the resolution of problems identified.


Hours and Travel

Meet travel requirements of the position. Work a flexible schedule, which may include evenings, weekends.
