Consumers Energy is seeking a Field Engineer to serve the Southeast Region of Michigan and can be based out of the following Michigan locations:  Parnall Office in Jackson, St. Clair Gas Fields, or Northville Compressor Station. This position can be remote with the ability to regularly travel to gas compressor stations as required.




The Gas Storage Integrity Engineering department is responsible for asset management of the company underground natural gas storage fields, wellheads, pipelines, separation equipment and associated processing systems within the Gas Asset Management Department.  The department is responsible for the development, engineering, and implementation of projects to increase safety, improve system performance, deliverability, equipment reliability and adhere to regulatory compliance to meet statewide customer demands.  Consumers Energy has 15 underground gas storage fields with approximately 859 wells statewide.  These fields are in Michigan near Marion, Overisel, Northville and St Clair.




This role is within the Gas Storage Facilities Engineering group which is responsible for surface equipment and piping between the wing valve of the wellhead and the transmission system or the compressor station. This is a dual role providing engineering support and interface between project engineering and operations in the gas storage group. Engineering responsibilities include developing proposals for capital projects and evaluating/monitoring the condition of existing facilities. Operations responsibilities include supporting emergent issues, reviewing, revising, and developing maintenance procedures for field personnel.


Key responsibilities include:


  • Assess condition of existing storage field locations/equipment in conjunction with input from Field Team and identify potential future capital projects. Develop proposals and preliminary designs for site modifications needed to bring sites/equipment up to current standards in accordance with Business Objectives.
  • Develop strong working relationships with project engineers, project managers, field personnel, and other stakeholders
  • Support on-site project work during construction. Develop lock-out/tag-out procedures. Support pigging (in-line inspection) work by developing site-specific procedures. Participate in Hazard Assessments. Assist project engineer with commissioning and close-out activities.
  • Support field team for ongoing and emergent concerns by troubleshooting equipment and system components. Develop maintenance-related solutions. Ensure replacement components are designed, specified, procured, and installed in accordance with CE requirements.
  • Assist in defining storage asset health. Provide input on methods to categorize and evaluate current assets.



This position may be filled as a Sr Engineer I or Sr Engineering Technical Analyst I based the following qualifications: 


  • Sr Engineer I → Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited university, and a minimum of five (5) or more years of applied engineering working experience. 
  • Sr Engineering Technical Analyst I Bachelor's degree in a scientific/technical field, and five (5) or more years of experience (OR) Associate's degree in a scientific/technical field with nine (9) years of experience in the specific field (OR) thirteen (13) years Company or industry experience in positions that demonstrate required abilities and performance.




  • Familiarity with and understanding of applying LEAN/CE Way processes
  • Experience working on construction sites             
  • Familiarity with typical pipeline or compressor station construction techniques  
  • Familiarity with/understanding of gas storage processes
  • Familiarity with/understanding of gas/liquid separation and storage equipment
  • Ability to read and understand line drawings and weld maps       
  • Familiarity with, or ability to learn, various regulatory requirements applicable to gas storage      
  • Ability to maintain focus amid conflicting priorities.         
  • Ability to write cohesive technical documents    
  • Ability to mark-up and modify drawings
  • Ability to develop simple process diagrams and sketch field layouts
  • Ability to read and interpret relevant industry standards and codes          
  • Ability to spend time in the field on planned, and unplanned basis            
  • Interest in troubleshooting existing systems and proposing creative solutions




This position requires the individual work a minimum of 40 hours per week (45-50 typical) with 70% of time spent in the office or specific field locations.  Travel is required to job sites and project meetings and could be significant dependent upon location. Individuals need to be willing to work additional hours as necessary (including nights and weekend/holiday timeframes) to meet deadlines, and resolve emergent operational restrictions

While performing the duties of this job, the employee will be working in either an office setting or in the field at facility sites. Many facilities are in rural settings on unimproved (dirt/gravel) access roads. Facilities are generally open to the environment and thus will be subject to weather conditions at that site. Most facilities have a gravel surface which may be uneven or loose. The employee will be required to travel to and move easily around the facility once on site. The employee is required to talk and hear. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. The noise level on the construction site is often loud.
