Consumers Energy Gas Distribution Design Team is seeking a Gas Distribution Pipeline Design Lead to provide statewide oversight for contractor workload.  This position is eligible for hybrid remote work within the state of Michigan. On-site presence is required up to 3 days per week.




The Gas Distribution Pipeline Design Lead will be responsible for the oversight and approval of engineering designs and construction documentation for all Gas Distribution main and service replacement projects. These positions will be primarily responsible for the workload that includes the Natural Gas Delivery Plan, Vintage Service Replacement (VSR), and other distribution project programs such as Augment, Civic, New Business Main and CE Initiated projects.


This role will oversee Gas Distribution Projects within the identified Gas Distribution Service Territory and will collaborate with other Distribution Pipeline Engineering Leads to balance the design workload statewide. This role will also be responsible for leading a team of design technicians to ensure that cost effective designs are completed on time and at a high level of quality in order to facilitate both customer and company requirements. 




  • Lead Gas Distribution Design Team
    • Review and approve gas distribution engineering designs and complex operating procedures
    • Provide leadership on projects and ensure balanced workload across the group
    • Represent Gas Distribution Engineering as a technical expert to other parts of the organization
    • Coordinate alignment among the team to foster statewide consistency
    • Partner with other engineering teams to ensure effectiveness of designs and efficiency in their production
    • Review employee performance, coach, mentor and develop technicians on the team
    • Coordinate work movement among internal and external resources
  • Contribute to Gas Distribution Engineering Manual Standards committee to improve standards, ensure compliance and promote design efficiency
  • Lead projects associated with process/technical/compliance improvements, including collaboration and communication with other stakeholder groups
  • Create, monitor and report on metrics related to design timeliness and quality
  • Special project assignments as determined necessary by Gas Engineering and Supply leadership




This position may be filled as a Gas Distribution Design Leader II based on the following qualifications:


  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering and a minimum of five (5) years of work experience in natural gas engineering/design or integrity management
  • (OR) Associates Degree in engineering, scientific, or technical field, and nine (9) years of work experience in natural gas engineering/design or integrity management
  • (OR) no degree, and a minimum of thirteen (13) years of directly related experience in natural gas system engineering/design or integrity management




  • Knowledge of federal and state gas codes
  • Working knowledge of gas distribution system and design standards
  • Effective communication skills
  • Ability to lead a team of highly technical, diverse employees




This position requires the individual to work 40 to 50 hours per week with 80% of time spent in the primary work location and 20% at specific field locations in the state of Michigan.  Travel may include, but not limited to, job sites, department meetings and field review/support meetings which may take place prior to or during construction.  Individuals need to be willing to work additional hours as necessary to meet deadlines.
