This is a hybrid (virtual/onsite) position with required onsite days on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday and is preferred to be assigned to One Energy Plaza located in Jackson, MI but is open to being assigned to any Consumers Energy Service Center located throughout Michigan's lower Peninsula.  The selected candidate must be within a commutable distance or willing to relocate (relocation package is available for those that qualify). 

 

General Summary of Job Responsibilities

 

As a member of the Facilities Engineering and Design staff, the Facilities Electrical Engineer is responsible for all engineering functions required to manage the corporation's electrical system assets. This includes but is not limited to analysis and design of electrical systems, consulting, troubleshooting electrical systems, preparation of preventive maintenance procedures, developing performance specifications, system design criteria, electrical system inspection processes, drawing reviews, and selected construction management duties. This position also includes life cycle cost evaluations, long-term strategic planning support functions, budgeting and scheduling activities, and preparation of annual objectives and work plans.

 

The Electrical Engineer is responsible for the engineering and design necessary to support the sustainable operation of our distribution system. This position collaborates with internal teams and external stakeholders and develops technical projects as needed.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

 

  • Develop, plan, and manage electrical programs.
  • Perform electrical system design, analysis, and documentation.
  • Coordinate with cross-functional teams including project management, facilities operations, mechanical, civil, and QA/QC teams.
  • Conduct design reviews, technical evaluations, and troubleshooting to ensure compliance with standards and project requirements.
  • Ensure adherence to electrical codes, regulations, and safety standards (NEC, IEC, IEEE, OSHA, NFPA, and local codes).
  • Support procurement, vendor management, and technical evaluation of electrical components and systems.
  • Contribute to process improvements, reliability, and efficiency initiatives within electrical programs.
  • Develop specifications for the procurement of electrical equipment and materials, and estimate material, labor, and construction costs for budget planning purposes.
  • Prepare comprehensive reports and compile data related to current and prospective electrical engineering projects and studies.
  • Ensure adherence to specifications, codes, and customer requirements by overseeing and coordinating installation, manufacturing, construction, maintenance, documentation, support, and testing activities.
  • Establish construction, manufacturing, and installation standards and specifications through detailed calculations.
  • Verify that installations and operations comply with established standards and customer requirements by preparing electrical system specifications, technical drawings, and topographical maps.
  • Collaborate with customers, colleagues, and other stakeholders to discuss existing or potential engineering products and projects.
  • Perform a variety of engineering tasks utilizing computer-aided design and engineering software and equipment.
  • Design, maintain, implement, and improve electrical instruments, facilities, components, equipment, products, or systems for industrial, commercial, or residential applications.
  • Design, control, and implement electrical systems and products.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or as necessary.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities 

 

  • Knowledge of electrical systems and principles.
  • Program management capabilities.
  • Ability to coordinate across multidisciplinary teams.
  • Proficiency in electrical design and analysis tools (AutoCAD, ETAP, SKM, Revit, or similar).
  • Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills.
  • Understanding of electrical safety practices and regulatory compliance.
  • Thorough understanding of applicable codes and standards related to electrical engineering.
  • Proficiency in industry-standard design and calculation software.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills with meticulous attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of electric utility distribution planning, construction, operation, and maintenance theory and practice.
  • Hands-on experience with electric utility operations, including generation, transmission, and distribution of three-phase alternating current (AC) power.
  • Familiarity with distribution planning principles is considered an asset.

 

Education and Experience 

 

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program with a minimum of two (2) years or experience in electrical engineering.

OR 

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering from a non-ABET accredited program plus a Professional Engineering license with a minimum of two (2) years or experience in electrical engineering.
