This position is assigned onsite at the Ludington Pump Storage located in Ludington, MI.  The selected candidates must be within a commutable distance or willing to relocate (relocation package is available to those who qualify).

 

General Summary of Job Responsibilities

 

This role is designed as one part of a two-person team responsible for Ludington Pumped Storage Dam Safety, licensing, and general civil engineering support.

 

The Senior Principal Dam Safety Engineer is a multifaceted position responsible for dam safety, licensing, and civil engineering at Ludington Pumped Storage. Duties include overseeing the full lifecycle of dam safety, ensuring FERC regulatory compliance, administering licenses, and managing major civil engineering activities as workload permits for the site's infrastructure. This role provides technical leadership, ensures compliance with all Federal Energy Regulatory Commission license requirements, upholds public and dam safety, and leads complex engineering projects and inspections.

 

Key responsibilities include leading the Dam Safety Program, managing regulatory filings and compliance, overseeing the Emergency Action Plan (EAP) program, administering and ensuring compliance with FERC licenses, and providing civil engineering oversight and technical leadership.

 

The Senior Principal Civil Engineer serves as the subject matter expert who develops and implements process standards for design, planning, and oversight of complex infrastructure projects. These projects may include renovation and construction of various structures such as buildings, dams, and pipelines. The incumbent acts as the primary point of contact and Consumers representative for multiple large and complex company projects, collaborating with internal and external resources to ensure projects are completed on time, within budget, and to the highest standards. This position leads teams of engineers and technicians on several large, complex projects, delegating work and responsibilities to lower-level engineers and guiding and mentoring them to enhance functional results.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

 

  • Foster a culture of safety on all projects, ensuring that risks are identified and mitigated.
  • Responsible for project progress and for ensuring that design specifications, safety, and sanitation standards are met. Upon completion of a project, inspect, repair, and maintain structures as needed.
  • Lead internal coworkers, architects, contractors, and surveyors in the implementation of established processes related to installations, reference points, grades, elevations, and other factors that may affect construction, to ensure proper project progress.
  • Draft and present reports on complex topics related to projects, such as environmental impact statements and right-of-way descriptions, ensuring adherence to all local, state, and federal codes and regulations.
  • Estimate materials, equipment, and labor required to determine project costs. Prepare proposals, reports, specifications, calculations, and other deliverables as needed.
  • Plan projects based on the analysis of relevant materials, including drawings, blueprints, aerial photography, survey reports, maps, and other geological and topographic data.
  • Oversee design specifications by computing load and grade requirements, material stress factors, flow rates, and similar parameters. Comply with all relevant legislation, codes of practice, and professional standards.
  • Assess the strength of foundations, concrete, asphalt, or steel by testing materials and soil using appropriate methods to ensure safe modifications or construction. Perform fieldwork and data collection as necessary, including soil testing and surveying.
  • Use design software and drawing tools to accurately render and communicate designs. Plan and design related systems and structures, such as transportation or hydraulic systems. Prepare feasibility studies, reports, designs, calculations, cost estimates, construction schedules, and other technical documentation.
  • Manage the work of multidisciplinary project team members and provide guidance to project stakeholders and managerial staff regarding engineering requirements for the construction of various designs, modifications, and structural repairs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or as may be necessary.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

 

  • Understanding of civil engineering principles, practices, and tools.
  • Proficient with AutoCAD, Civil 3D, or similar software.
  • Thorough knowledge of materials, methods, and tools involved in the construction or repair of buildings, pipelines, and other related structures.
  • Comprehensive understanding of safety regulations relevant to assigned projects.
  • Ability to identify and resolve complex problems.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Capable of both creative and analytical thinking.
  • Detail-oriented and accurate.

 

Education and Experience

 

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering and a Professional Engineer License (PE) with a minimum of ten (10) years of experience in an advanced civil engineering role.
