Location: This position is onsite at the Ludington Pump Storage located in Ludington, MI. The selected candidate must be within a commutable distance or willing to relocate (relocation package is available for those that qualify).
General Summary of Job Responsibilities
The Senior Manager of Engineering is responsible for overseeing multiple engineering teams involved in the planning, coordination, and execution of complex engineering projects. This individual serves as the primary liaison between engineering frontline leaders, senior leadership, and key stakeholders. The incumbent partners with senior leaders to develop and implement the company's engineering strategy and is responsible for establishing and advancing engineering processes, standards, and best practices across Consumers Energy.
This role is accountable for budgeting, forecasting, and managing engineering costs for assigned teams while collaborating with cross-functional departments to ensure the efficient and effective operation of engineering activities.
For the Ludington Pumped Storage Facility, this position provides leadership to the engineering team supporting multiple major projects, including a multi-year corrective work program involving significant scope, complexity, and site risk. The role also leads the System Engineering Team and serves as a member of the site's Senior Leadership Team.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Confer with project personnel to develop work plans and assign duties, responsibilities, and appropriate levels of authority.
- Establish and monitor systems and procedures to measure progress and facilitate effective problem-solving with supervisors, project managers, engineers, and customers.
- Investigate concerns regarding engineering products or services and implement corrective actions as necessary.
- Evaluate and select vendors for engineering equipment and supplies and negotiate contracts and agreements with external contractors and service providers.
- Review project proposals and plans to determine timelines, budget constraints, resource requirements, staffing needs, and project execution strategies. Oversee all engineering projects from initiation through completion, ensuring adherence to budget, schedule, quality, and safety standards.
- Direct and coordinate project activities through subordinate leaders to ensure work progresses according to established schedules and budgets.
- Develop and manage budgets, schedules, and performance expectations for engineering teams.
- Serve as the engineering department's primary point of contact for project-related inquiries, concerns, and requests.
- Perform other duties as assigned or required.
Additional Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide strategic leadership and technical oversight for all engineering activities at the Ludington Pumped Storage Facility, ensuring the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of plant assets. Lead and develop the System Engineering Team to address emergent equipment issues, troubleshoot plant problems, improve system reliability, implement long-term asset management strategies, and execute life-cycle planning initiatives.
- Lead engineering support for the multi-year Ludington Corrective Work Project by providing technical direction, engineering governance, risk management, and integration of engineering activities with project execution, outage planning, and long-term asset strategies. Support project development and execution through concept development, business case preparation, scope definition, budget development, risk assessments, and governance processes.
- Develop, staff, and manage the engineering organization required to support site projects and major unit outages. Ensure sufficient engineering resources, technical expertise, contractor support, succession planning, field oversight, decision-making, and issue resolution throughout all phases of project execution.
- Establish engineering priorities and allocate resources to balance site reliability objectives, capital projects, outage support, regulatory commitments, and long-term strategic initiatives. Serve as the primary technical liaison between plant operations, maintenance, project management, asset strategy teams, contractors, original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), and executive leadership.
- Provide leadership and approval for engineering studies, equipment condition assessments, root cause analyses, design modifications, technical specifications, and corrective action plans. Ensure compliance with applicable regulatory requirements, engineering standards, company policies, and industry best practices. Develop and mentor engineering personnel while fostering a culture of safety, accountability, technical excellence, continuous improvement, and high-performance teamwork.

Education/Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited program or a Bachelor's degree in Engineering from a non-ABET accredited program combined with a Professional Engineer (PE) license.
- Minimum of seven (7) years of project management experience in a regulated environment.
