Candidate must be located within 60 miles of the Ludington Pump Storage facility OR willing to relocate.

 

General Summary

 

This position is based at the Ludington Pumped Storage (LPS) power generation station just south of Ludington on the shores of Lake Michigan. LPS is among the largest hydraulic pumped storage facilities in the world which is comprised of six recently upgraded reversible pump turbine units each with a nameplate (stator) capacity of 455MVA. LPS is a key generation facility for Consumers Energy long term strategic energy plan well into the future with its FERC license recently being extended to 6/30/2069.

As an Electrical System Engineer within the Hydro Generation Planning Group, you will have the overall responsibility for the electrical systems assigned to support continued operational readiness for those systems and to support achievement operational key performance indicators (KPI). Responsibility of those systems will also encompass improving safety, quality, and reliability by becoming intimately familiar as an eventual subject matter expert. This position requires a highly motivated individual that will be working in a team-oriented environment.

 

Duties and Responsibilities 

 

  • Evaluating & assessing systems in accordance with the System Health procedure & department policy. This includes associated inspections, monitoring, review of preventative maintenance, and identifying any negative operational trends that could adversely impact KPIs. The systems assigned under this position will be focused on Unit electrical (stator & rotor, excitation, 20kV power distribution, etc.) or balance of plant (transformers, motor control centers, 3 phase induction motors, control systems, etc.) depending on experience of applicant and collaboration with the existing Systems Engineering group. 
  • Developing long term strategic asset management plans and recommendations to support operational KPIs for assigned systems through the current facility license period (2069). This function will work with our Long Term Financial Plan process to ensure that any identified system replacement, modification, improvement, or major maintenance projects are economically justified, have the correct scope, and implemented at the proper time to ensure continued support of operational KPIs. As part of an interdisciplinary team, there will be multiple opportunities to refine and review these strategic plans with other Systems Engineers & stakeholders ensure they are coordinated with the operational demands of the facility and available funds.
  • Provide Systems Engineering support for operations and maintenance for assigned systems. Maintaining awareness of other systems under the responsibility of the LPS Systems Engineering group to facilitate cross training & backup support.
  • Act as a liaison & sponsor for projects that are being executed by our Enterprise Project Management group. Interaction with the Design Authority on these projects and other minor ones that may be executed internally with the System Engineer being the project manager. Coordinates closely with other technical disciplines in planning and executing work as an integrated System Engineering team. 

  

Requirements/ Qualifications 

 

  • A Bachelor's degree in engineering
  • 5+ years’ experience of applied engineering.
  • Experience working at utility scale generation facilities OR other industrial facilities with similar electrical systems.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to speak in front medium size audiences.
  • Demonstrated problem solving and analysis skills.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Knowledge of industry, and regulatory guides, codes, and standards and demonstrated expertise in electrical system engineering (NFPA, IEEE, ISO, IEC, NEMA, OSHA 1910 Sub. S).   
  • Working knowledge of the following processes: conduct of operations, maintenance planning, purchase requisitions, document control, work planning & scheduling, electrical testing (hi-pot, megger, data logging/oscillography), system commissioning & testing, configuration control (design change requests, request for information, non-conformance reports).

 

Preferred Qualifications 

 

  • Electrical Engineer degree
  • Project management experience
  • Large scale Engineering, Procurement, & Construction (EPC) project experience
  • Plant Operations experience
  • Root Cause Analysis experience
  • SAP experience
  • Working knowledge of the FERC regulations and guidelines (MOD Standards)
  • Working knowledge of generator protection relaying (ANSI/IEEE Standard C37.2 devices)
  • Generator rotor/stator testing, inspection, & maintenance experience.
  • Professional Engineering designation

 

Hours and Travel 

 

Much of the work for this position will be based out of the LPS facility with a nominally scheduled M-F work week. However, occasional weekend, holiday work, and overtime are required if driven by emergent needs of operations, including electric power demands, market conditions, and business considerations. Depending on ultimate salary grade, this overtime may be compensated for in accordance with company policy. Occasional out-of-state travel is required for inspecting components in supplier shops and attending training seminars (up to 20% of all travel).

There are occasions where confined spaces must be entered to perform inspections, testing, or offer maintenance support.
