This position is onsite at the Ludington Pump Storage located in Ludington, MI. The selected candidate must be within a commutable distance or willing to relocate (relocation package is available for those that qualify).
We are looking for: Principal Electrical Engineer (Instrumentations and Controls Engineer)
The Principal Electric Engineer is a departmental subject matter expert of electrical engineer. This role is responsible for engineering and design of large complex project for the sustainable operation of our distribution, generation, and storage system. This role collaborates with a team of engineers and technicians and coordinates across the organization and external stakeholders, on large complex technical projects within their subject matter of expertise. They are specialist in electrical utility systems and products design, layout, implementations.
This position is responsible for leading a technical team overseeing the design and construction of electrical and I&C components and systems at the Ludington Pumped Storage Plant. The individual will be the responsible leader for the design, equipment specification, equipment selection, procurement, work instruction development, planning, construction, and testing / commissioning of electrical, instrumentation, and control equipment in a power generation facility. Daily job duties will be dynamic and transition as the project progresses through the engineering phase through construction and closeout. Must have experience performing engineering in an Engineering, Procurement, and Construction capacity. Must be willing to work daily at the Ludington Pumped Storage Plant near Ludington, MI, and work extended hours and long weeks as necessary during periods of high demand.
The knowledge and skills involved with this position include but are not limited to:
- Demonstrated leadership capabilities
- Demonstrated experience with the design, installation, testing, and operation of electrical and I&C components for power plants and/or other high uptime industrial applications where high reliability and strict compliance with applicable industry standards are key
- Highly skilled in developing detailed engineering specifications and reviewing submittals, equipment, work plans, and construction activities to ensure compliance with the specifications. This may require in-depth reviews and independent analyses
- Highly skilled and experienced supporting the development and implementation of plans, quality systems, problem identification and issue resolution processes, and in leading commissioning and testing of new electrical equipment in an industrial / power generation facility setting
- Demonstrated skills in developing and maintaining strong working relationships with internal and external customers, partners, and suppliers
- Knowledge of applicable codes related to electronic engineering
- Proficient in design and calculation software
- Written and verbal communication skills
- Organizational skills and attention to detail
- Analytical and problem-solving skills
- Knowledge of the theory and practice of electric utility distribution planning, construction, operation, and maintenance.
- Working knowledge of electric utility operation (i.e., generation, transmission, and distribution of three phase alternating current power)
- Knowledge of distribution planning principles is an asset

In this role, you will be responsible for:
- Serve as the electrical power and I&C systems lead on the Ludington Project, providing engineering direction and mentorship to team members and contractors
- Serve as the electrical and I&C engineering point of contact for assigned projects. Oversee all aspects of assigned electrical & I&C engineering projects at the Ludington Pumped Storage Plant from initiation through delivery, ensuring adherence to budget, schedule, and technical performance requirements
- Design, control, and implement electrical systems and products and serve as the primary point of contact with clients for all electrical engineering project matters. Manage the development and implementation of electrical systems
- Designing, maintaining, implementing, or improving electrical instruments, facilities, components, equipment products, or systems for industrial, commercial, or domestic purposes. Prepare contract documents, including specifications, drawings, and addenda
- Performing a wide range of engineering tasks by operating computer-assisted design or engineering software and equipment
- Collaborate with customers, coworkers, and others to discuss existing or potential engineering products or projects and monitor project progress and budget, and prepare reports for upper management
- Ensuring that installation and operations conform to standards and customer requirements by preparing electrical systems specifications, technical drawings, or topographical maps and investigate and resolve project issues in a timely manner
- Establishing construction, manufacturing, or installation standards or specifications by performing a wide range of detailed calculations
- Ensuring compliance with specifications, codes, or customer requirements by directing or coordinating installation, manufacturing, construction, maintenance, documentation, support, or testing activities
- Interface with others within and outside of the division which will include, but not limited to, project planners, project managers, schedulers, construction coordinators/supervisors, protection engineers, electric field lab, and design engineers in both the substation and HVD lines groups
- The employee will need to both develop and respond to project scope documents, timelines, cost, and manpower estimates, etc., and resolve potential issues that may arise with these
- Occasionally, field visits, usually to electric substations or generating plants, may be required to define project scope, determine existing conditions, or meet with field technical employees
- Provide subject matter expertise and mentorship to design engineering analyst employees to aid in their growth and technical understanding
- Lead and participate in internal and cross-functional problem-solving efforts and utilize / institute automation to remove waste.
- Other non-essential duties as assigned or may be necessary
