Department Summary

The State Governmental Affairs Internship Program is geared towards current college students who are earning a political science or related degree and who have a passion for increasing their understanding of the legislative process in Michigan.  The State Governmental Affairs Internship Program at Consumers Energy has core principles in place to challenge the intern and practically apply previous experience and education.   


Job Description/Responsibilities

Responsible for providing administrative support to the Office of State Governmental Affairs, a Department of Governmental Public Affairs at Consumers Energy. This internship will consist of a variety of tasks including tracking legislation, primarily related to energy and environmental policy, background research, summarizing proposed legislation of importance to the company, and in discussing and presenting background material to the State Governmental Affairs staff.

The successful candidate will participate in staff discussions, attend meetings, attend House and Senate hearings and applicable workgroups in a supportive capacity.  Intern must be able to listen closely, take notes and reflect on the intent and meaning of a complex or technical discussion. In short, the intern will become involved in the operations of the office and should be able to be a valuable and active participant in the work of the company. Additional support for the department will include standard office duties such as covering phones, supporting event planning, meeting coordination, and assisting with legislative concerns and questions.

Candidates must be willing and able to rely on Policies, Procedures, Job Aids and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the position.

Enrolled and actively pursuing an associates or bachelor's degree in public affairs, government or international relations, public policy, environmental policy, law, and political science related majors from an accredited university as a full time or part time student. A successful candidate should have a GPA of 2.7 or higher.

This internship is located in Lansing, MI. Travel withing the State of Michigan may be required.


Essential Functions

In addition to working alongside full time employees carrying out State Governmental Affairs functions for Consumers Energy, Governmental Affairs Program Interns may have the option to participate in a number of additional optional events within the program. This includes intern networking events, company tours, department meetings, etc.


Hours and Travel

This position requires the individual to typically work 20 hours per week with 85% of the time spent in the office or specific field locations. Travel is required to job sites and project meetings and could be significant dependent upon location.  Individuals need to be willing to work additional hours as necessary.
