Department Summary

The Corporate Political Affairs Internship Program is geared towards current college students who are earning a political science or related degree and who have a passion for increasing their understanding of the governmental and political affairs landscape at the state and federal level.  The Corporate Political Affairs Internship Program at Consumers Energy has core principles in place to challenge the intern and practically apply previous experience and education.   


Job Description/Responsibilities

Responsible for providing administrative support within Corporate Political Affairs and Governmental Affairs.  This could include research, database management, analyzing and preparing information on policy issue areas and elections; assisting in coordination of special events, meetings and other communications, data, and other administrative duties, prepare drafts of correspondence and other documents and interacting with the Executive Committee, the Steering Committee and members of Employees for Better Government (EBG) Political Action Committee (PAC).May require lifting and/or carrying heavy loads (Approx. 5-35lbs)
Must be able to interface and work with teams with diverse disciplines, understand their administrative needs and requirements. Must be willing and able to rely on Policies, Procedures, Job Aids and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the position. The successful candidate will possess good computer skills, including the aptitude and ability to learn and use one or more versions of specialized software. We are willing to train the skilled candidate on the job.

Enrolled and actively pursuing an associates or bachelor's degree in political science from an accredited university as a full time or part time student.  A successful candidate should have a GPA of 2.7 or higher.

  • Understanding and knowledge of Michigan Campaign Finance Law and Federal Election Commission Guidelines
  • Proficiency in software applications such as Cision Government Relations and SharePoint
  • Event planning and management experience
  • Must have strong political acumen and interest in learning skills relevant to grassroots communications, PAC growth and management, elections and be willing to work in a non-partisan setting

The location of the internship may vary depending upon assignment and travel within the State of Michigan may be required. However, during this time of uncertainty, we are committed to ensuring the safety and health of our communities and co-workers.  We are using new and innovative ways to interview and onboard new employees remotely at this time. This role could be remote until our leadership team has determined it’s safe to resume work in the office.


Essential Functions

In addition to working alongside full time employees carrying out Corporate Political Affairs functions for Consumers Energy, Corporate Political Affairs Program Interns will have the option to participate in a number of additional optional events within the program. This includes intern networking events, company tours, and the consistently top-ranked philanthropic event, the Intern Challenge.


Hours and Travel

This position requires the individual to typically work 20 hours per week with 85% of the time spent in the office or specific field locations. Travel is required to job sites and project meetings and could be significant dependent upon location.  Individuals need to be willing to work additional hours as necessary.
