Department Summary

This position is within Energy Delivery / Gas Asset Management / System Planning and will report to the System Engineering Lead. Gas Distribution System Planning is responsible for analysis of the natural gas distribution system from city gate stations to end user.  System Planning receives requests from a diverse cross section of employees of Consumers Energy ranging from end users to executive leadership.  The team is responsible for modeling the gas distribution system and making decisions on how to configure the system to maintain safe and dependable service.   



Job Description/Responsibilities

The Distribution System Planning Outage Coordinators main responsibility is to review each outage impact to the gas system, duration, and the procedure associated with the request. Daily Activities may include:


  • Gas system modeling using Synergi software by DNV-GL
  • Providing technical and operational expertise in natural gas systems specifically related to the isolation of City Gates, Regulator Stations, and the Distribution System (high pressure, medium pressure and standard pressure).
  • Review and approve complex operating procedures
  • Providing strong project management skills and techniques in coordinating conflicting outages across Consumers Energy territory with stakeholders
  • Track and Plan system enhancements to reduce risk and increase reliability of the natural gas distribution system



  • A Bachelor's degree in a scientific/technical field with less than 1 year of experience. (OR) Associate's degree in a scientific/technical field with 2 years of experience in the specific field. (OR) Extensive Company or industry experience in positions that demonstrate required abilities and performance.


  • Synergi software experience
  • GIS experience

Essential Functions:

Engineering support for the planning, design, construction, and maintenance of Electric and Gas Distribution and Electric Generation systems as well as facilities and ancillary support processes for all utility operations. Duties and who this individual reports to will fluctuate between projects, Practice Areas, and offices. Supervise and consult on a complex set of activities in support of the energy delivery systems routinely in the engineering analytical space on a frequent  basis. Lead and/or assist with GIS (geographic Information System) model construction, data construction and data analysis. Lead and/or assist with engineering support for the design, plans, specifications, reports, maps, environmental impacts, permits, contracts, schedules, estimates, surveying, data collection, construction observation, and field investigation.  Provide engineering support services with accuracy, on time and under budget. Use computer assisted engineering, design, and drafting software and equipment to prepare engineering support and design documents.  Understand and follow company established standard procedures for file structure and standard drawing procedures for projects.  Become familiar with plans and specifications, maps, and related material for each project and be able to utilize the information appropriately. Assists in client contact and communication.  Utilize effective communication skills to answer inquiries from coworkers, clients, or the public.  Public involvement may include producing reports, graphics, presentations, and other visual material as well as occasional speaking or meeting with stakeholders. Attend internal and external meetings.  Provide all engineering support services in a legal and ethical manner.   May review operating and construction sites to monitor progress and other duties per the design documents.  Individual must be able to clearly communicate with field personal to safely perform equipment checkouts.  Individual must be able to understand and comply with NERC standards.  Regular attendance is expected.


Hours and Travel:

This position requires the individual work 40 hours per week with 90% of time spent in the office or specific field locations. This position may require the ability to travel between field locations. This position will be part of the on-call rotation that will include nights and weekend/holiday timeframes.
