The Civil Engineer position is eligible for remote work or can be based in any of our Michigan locations. The location for this position is being posted for the Parnall Office in Jackson, MI, however CEC has compressor plant in multiple locations, so the actual location may be flexible.




Located within the Gas Compression Engineering department, engineering is responsible for deliverables for both modifications and new construction projects concerning the natural gas compression fleet. Civil Structural Engineering works closely with project managers, engineers of all disciplines, plant engineers, environmental engineers, plant operations and maintenance personnel, outage managers, construction managers, architectural & engineering firms, contracted labor, and vendor representatives to ensure quality projects are completed safely, on time, and on budget


Employees in this department provide leadership, sound engineering judgement, coordination and organizational skills as well as clear communication to coordinate successful completion of a project.




The Civil Engineer will work in the Compression Engineering Department and will support Consumers Energy’s natural gas facilities for the discipline of civil/structural engineering across the State of Michigan. The Civil Engineer works in a team setting in the role of lead and/or support engineer for engineering projects within Consumers Energy.


The Civil Engineer will perform moderately complex assignments requiring application of standard techniques, theory, procedures and criteria in carrying out a sequence of related engineering tasks. The candidate must independently evaluate, select, and apply engineering theory, techniques, procedures and criteria, using judgment in making adaptations and modifications. The Civil Engineer will be required to work efficiently and effectively on small and large project teams.


This position is primarily focused on structural and foundations engineering, but candidate should have some knowledge of the principles of civil, geotechnical engineering, rigging & hoisting, architecture, site design, and environmental engineering.


Key responsibilities include:


  • Develop and/or review engineering drawings and calculations that detail plans and specifications for construction projects.
  • Communicate effectively with a vast group of stakeholders to ensure all civil technical aspects of the project are completed per the safety, scope, quality, schedule, and budgetary objectives.
  • Identify, analyze, and recommend corrective actions to technical issues identified in the field during project execution and/or initial operation.
  • Develop and/or review civil engineering technical specifications and bid documents for construction service contracts.
  • Perform field engineering and support the resolution of construction issues.
  • Assist project management and project controls with the development of project schedules and budgets.
  • Attend and/or lead project coordination meetings.
  • Participate in the closeout of projects including turnover of project files and record documents at project closure; captures lessons learned.
  • Collaborate directly with procurement groups, construction contractors, and vendors with scope development, material evaluations & recommendations, technical issue resolutions.

  • Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from an ABET accredited program is required
  • Minimum of  7+ years of engineering experience




  • Experience within an industrial type plant.
  • Knowledge of the design, construction, or operation of natural gas systems, with specific fundamental knowledge of equipment foundations, pipelines, and industrial buildings.
  • Project management experience including safety, leadership, schedule logic and implementation, procurement, and construction means and methods.
  • Knowledge of industry and building codes as they relate to discipline specific design and construction.
  • Knowledge of planning and permitting as they relate to discipline specific design and construction.
  • Experience in reviewing designs to assure compliance with engineering design, applicable codes, constructability, and industry standards.
  • Experience in procurement of engineered material, equipment, and professional services.
  • Experience in coordinating and developing contract documents, specifically engineering drawings and technical specifications, for both consulting and construction services.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) License.
  • Experience in Lean and/or a working understanding of lean manufacturing environments.




  • Planning, design, construction, and maintenance of Natural Gas compression stations, regulation and distribution facilities as well as facilities and ancillary support process for all utility operations.
  • Ability to lead, problem solve, and work well in a team environment. 
  • Exemplify safe work practices and follow the company’s compliance standards. 
  • Lead and/or assist with engineering projects to include design, plans, inspections, system planning, specifications, reports, maps, environmental impacts, permits, contracts, schedules, estimates, surveying, easements, data collection, construction observation, and field investigation.  Serve as onsite project representative.
  • Provide all engineering services in a legal and ethical manner. Provide engineering services with accuracy, integrating all applicable governmental and company laws, standards and procedures on time and under budget.
  • Use computer assisted engineering, design, and drafting software and equipment to prepare engineering and design documents. 
  • Reviews operating and construction sites to monitor progress and other duties per the design documents.
  • Understand and follow company established standard procedures for file structure and standard drawing procedures for projects. 
  • Become familiar with plans and specifications, maps, and related material for each project and be able to utilize the information appropriately. 
  • Utilize effective oral and written communication skills to provide technical expertise to   coworkers, clients, customers, government entities and the public.  Public involvement may include producing reports, graphics, presentations, and other visual material as well as occasional speaking or meeting with stakeholders.
  • Resolve all customer complaints in a timely manner.
  • Regular attendance is expected.




The average travel time for this position is up to 25%, depending on project workload. Required travel is primarily in-state to Consumers Energy facilities all around the lower peninsula of Michigan.


This position requires that the individual works a minimum of 40 hours per week (45-50 typical) with approximately 75% of their time spent in the office or specific field locations. Individuals need to be willing to work additional hours as necessary to meet deadlines or assist with plant outages. Individuals may have to work outside of assigned headquarters to support projects or plant outages which may require overnight stays. Individuals must have a valid driver’s license.

 This position must be able to tolerate a heavy industrial environment, and should be able to climb stairs and/or fixed ladders to elevated platforms, enter/crawl into small/tight spaces (access hatches), and walk a rough construction grade as required.

Must be able to stand and walk for periods of up to and beyond eight hours in all kinds of weather; snow, mud, dirt water, ice, etc. The employee frequently is required to talk or hear.   The employee must frequently lift and move up to ten pounds and occasionally lift and move up to fifty pounds. The recommended maximum weight for employees to lift without the aid of other employees or a lifting device is 35 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.  The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. The noise level on the construction site is often loud.  Individual must have the ability to work up to 16 continuous hours during emergent work.
