Department Summary

 

The HVD Lines Contracted Design Division provides critical and quality engineering services to our customers.  This division supports technical work on projects ranging in scope from complete new high voltage electric power lines down to crossarm and insulator replacements through contracted services supplied by third parties.

 

Job Description/Responsibilities

 

This person will be responsible for providing engineering support for designs that require engineering review outside of Consumers Energy’s standard practices.  This person would be expected to become knowledgeable on a variety of engineering concerns that may require special attention, which includes analysis of equipment and material applications for the design and construction of HVD lines.  In addition, this position will review the most recent changes to the National Electric Safety Code and incorporate these changes and other best engineering practices into Consumers Energy HVD line designs.  This position is responsible for communicating with persons outside and inside the company concerning topics related to HVD Lines that are of high importance and unique in nature.  This position is directly responsible for supervising contractors who are working on capital HVD projects for reliability and capacity needs.  The successful candidate will develop contracts and documents for our contracted designs including scopes, drawings, BOMs, permitting support, etc to support the electric High Voltage Distribution Lines projects. This position will review work of designers and outside contractors, manage workload, set priorities among competing interests, process invoices and track budgets; and be able to report on these projects.

 

Jackson-Parnall location - open to other locations or remote work across southern region of state

 

Requirements/Qualifications

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in a requisite engineering field from an ABET accredited institution.
  • 5+ years engineering experience

  • Prior experience designing power lines with an understanding of electric lines construction practices and limitations.
  • Knowledge of PLS-CADD and High Voltage Distribution system components
  • Strong written and verbal communication and problem-solving skills. Ability to communicate across multiple organizations and to people with varied technical experience.  
  • Excellent, clear oral and written communications skills and customer relations skills
  • Must be self-motivated and exhibit a positive and professional attitude. 
  • Ability to handle multiple projects, meet deadlines, provide appropriate solutions to problems, and make decisions in a team environment
  • Must be flexible and able to manage multiple tasks and shifting priorities
  • Strong Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications
     
    Essential Functions

 

  • Planning, design, construction, and maintenance of Electric and Gas Distribution and Electric Generation systems as well as facilities and ancillary support process for all utility operations.
  • Duties, and who this individual reports to, will fluctuate between projects, Practice Areas, and offices.
  • Individual possesses the skills to lead, problem solve, and work well in a team environment.  Individual should exemplify safe work practices and follow the company’s compliance standards. 
  • Lead and/or assist with engineering projects to include design, plans, inspections, system planning, specifications, reports, maps, environmental impacts, permits, contracts, schedules, estimates, surveying, easements, data collection, construction observation, and field investigation. 
  • Provide engineering services with accuracy, integrating all applicable governmental and company laws, standards and procedures on-time and under budget.
  • Use computer assisted engineering, design, and drafting software and equipment to prepare engineering and design documents. 
  • Understand and follow company established standard procedures for file structure and standard drawing procedures for projects.
  • Become familiar with plans and specifications, maps, and related material for each project and be able to utilize the information appropriately. 
  • Assists in client contact and communication.  Utilize effective oral and written communication skills to provide technical expertise to   coworkers, clients, customers, government entities and the public. 
  • Public involvement may include producing reports, graphics, presentations, and other visual material as well as occasional speaking or meeting with stakeholders. Attend internal and external meetings. 
  • Provide all engineering services in a legal and ethical manner. Resolve all customer complaints in a timely manner. Serve as onsite project representative. 
  • Reviews operating and construction sites to monitor progress and other duties per the design documents. 
  • Regular attendance is expected.
     

Hours and Travel

 

This position requires the individual work a minimum of 40 hours per week (45-50 typical) with 80% of time spent in the office or specific field locations. Travel is required to job sites and project meetings and could be significant dependent upon location.  Individuals need to be willing to work additional hours as necessary to meet deadlines or assist with storm restoration activities. Individual should be willing to participate in the on-call rotation in case of potential storms. Individual may have to work outside of assigned headquarters to help with storm restoration which may require overnight stays Individuals must have a valid driver’s license

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. The noise level on the construction site is often loud.  Individual must have the ability to work up to 16 continuous hours during emergent work.
