Job Description

The Compliance Assurance Coordinator applies an intensive and diversified knowledge of engineering principles and practices in broad areas of assignments and related fields; makes decisions independently on engineering problems and methods; and represents the organization in meetings to resolve important questions.  The Senior Engineer/Environmental Analyst manages more complex projects involving technical expertise and integration of several regulations, operations or procedures, initiates programs to meet newly identified regulations, interfaces with industry and regulatory agencies on regulations with moderate impact on Company operations, plans and implements programs involving innovative and independent approaches. Requires the use of advanced techniques and the modification and extension of theories, precepts and practices of his/her field and related sciences and disciplines.


This position will serve as the Environmental Compliance Assurance Program Coordinator. Compliance Assurance Program responsibilities include completing the development of an environmental compliance assurance program including the following:

  • Incorporation of Consumers Energy compliance principles into the environmental compliance assurance program.
  • Development of a risk based internal audit and self-assessment program for the corporation including identification of frequency and scope over a multi-year period.
  • Management of the audit/self-assessment tools including site specific checklists, data bases, and score cards.
  • Development of a data trending and reporting system to deliver timely program assessments and risk characterization to subject matter experts (SME) and management on a monthly basis.
  • Development of a program document incorporating program elements including process flows for the various program elements (audits, self-assessment, reporting, reviews).
  • Integration of Environmental Compliance Assurance Program into Consumers Energy's Environmental Management System.
  • Integration and management of environmental compliance requirements utilizing the company’s new EHS software program – Enviance.


This position will require participation in industry groups to stay abreast of industry trends and best practices.  This position will also require a strong focus on risk management to protect Company interests, employees, customers and reputation. 

This position requires excellent communications skills as a representative of the Environmental Compliance Assurance Department and when asked, will provide the reports or presentation required to the Environmental Services Department and/or Senior Management.


Required Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited program OR Bachelor Degree in a technical field (i.e. environmental management, resource development, management, fisheries and wildlife or one of the natural science disciplines)
  • 4 or more years of exempt work experience

Essential Functions

Manage environmental projects and/or tasks in a collaborative setting with multiple disciplines. Preparing environmental and permitting documents in compliance with applicable governing statutes and implementing regulations; providing planning support in the design of major infrastructure projects; and supporting agency involvement, permitting, and public participation activities. Help support generating plant, distribution and other projects in the Company, manage large task assignments and small-scale projects, perform complex environmental analyses and studies, oversee and review work by other staff, contractors, and consultants; also interface with government agencies and the public. Take the lead in preparing NEPA/MEPA documents and permit applications working with senior environmental and project engineering staff. Must have excellent oral and written communication skills.


Hours and Travel

This position requires the individual work 40 hours per week and depending upon individual responsibilities, variable amounts of time split between office-based and field locations.
