Location: This is a hybrid (virtual/onsite) position with required onsite days on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday and may be assigned to any Consumers Energy Service Center located throughout Michigan's lower Peninsula. The selected candidate must be within a commutable distance or willing to relocate (relocation package is available for those that qualify).
General Summary of Job Responsibilities
The Senior Program Engineer is responsible for the engineering and technical disciplines needed to complete a project. The incumbent works to plan projects, establish project criteria, coordinate project reviews, and ensure the proper implementation of project elements. Schedule, plan, forecast, resource and manage all the technical activities aiming at assuring project accuracy and quality from conception to completion.
The Senior Program Engineer leads complex, multi-discipline engineering initiatives with significant technical, schedule, and stakeholder impact, and serves as the technical integrator between engineering, project management, vendors, and business partners
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Leads engineering deliverables across internal teams and external partners who do not report directly to the role
- Builds alignment and commitment through influence, data-driven recommendations, and credibility
- Holds peers and contributors accountable while maintaining strong working relationships
- Evaluates alternatives, assesses risk, and recommends solutions balancing cost, schedule, quality, and safety
- Coordinates scope, deliverables, and technical interfaces with engineers of record, consultants, and contractors
- Reviews, validates, and accepts engineering deliverables in accordance with contract and quality expectations
- Provides technical oversight of outsourced engineering work and resolves scope or quality issues
- Support the Agile project delivery cadence by helping balance team performance with tight deadlines. Develop specifications for the project's needed equipment
- Monitor compliance to applicable codes, practices, QA/QC policies, performance standards and specifications
- Review engineering deliverables and initiate appropriate corrective actions. Review the engineering tasks and initiate the necessary corrective actions
- Provide assistance and technical support to project managers and other project participants
- Prepare, schedule, coordinate and monitor the assigned engineering projects. Assign responsibilities and mentor project team
- Build strong partnerships with business partners and deeply understand their business goals
- Other duties as assigned or may be necessary
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
- Demonstrated ability to build trusted partnerships across organizational boundaries
- Skilled in facilitating alignment, resolving conflict, and enabling productive collaboration
- Coaches and mentors’ engineers through complex or high visibility work
- Tracks progress, removes obstacles, and adjusts priorities to meet commitments
- Familiarity with project management systems (e.g., Unifier) and engineering document control tools (e.g., ProjectWise)
- Working knowledge of project management principles
- Experience managing multiple concurrent assignments with competing priorities
- Demonstrated experience interfacing with both technical and business stakeholders
- Analytical and problem-solving skills
- Excellent knowledge of design and visualizations software such as AutoCAD
- Proficient in MS Office, with aptitude for learning new software
- Written and verbal communication skills
- Organizational skills and attention to detail
- Strong understanding of GD&T principles
- Familiarity with rules, regulations, best practices and performance standards
Education & Experience
- Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited program OR Engineering degree from a non-ABET accredited program plus a Professional Engineering license with 4 years of experience in a program engineer capacity
