Location: This is a hybrid (virtual/onsite) position with required onsite days on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday and may be assigned to any Consumers Energy Service Center located throughout Michigan's lower Peninsula. The selected candidate must be within a commutable distance or willing to relocate (relocation package is available for those that qualify).
General Summary of Job Responsibilities
The Senior Gas Storage Engineer (GSE) has many unique responsibilities and skillset requirements that vary significantly from typical utility engineering job responsibilities. The incumbent frequently coordinates with other internal departments including; Operations, Supply Chain, Project Management, Project Controls, Warehousing, Gas Control and many others.
The GSE will be involved in new horizontal, multi-lateral well project engineering and design; well workover and rehabilitation program operations of existing gas storage and water disposal wells, plug and abandonment of obsolete gas storage wells along with development of long-term monitoring and maintenance programs and wellhead repair/replacement activities; development of specialized well testing and diagnostic programs, providing field technical support and process change management.
The position responsibilities also include but are not limited to, providing technical support for development, operation, and maintenance of underground natural gas storage reservoirs. The role includes monitoring performance, maintaining records, developing procedures, and business planning.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Represent the organization in meetings and governmental audits to resolve important questions relative to specific discipline
- Provide engineering services with accuracy, integrate all applicable governmental and company laws, standards and procedures on time and under budget. Make decisions independently on well engineering problems and trouble-shooting methods. Provide all engineering services in a legal and ethical manner. Serve as onsite project representative where required
- Plan, design, construct, maintain, plug and monitor of active and plugged gas storage wells. Lead and/or assist with well engineering projects; includes design, plan, inspection, system plans, specifications, reports, maps, environmental impacts, permits, contracts, schedules, estimates, data collection, construction observation and field investigations
- Coordinate and communicate with multiple internal and external groups and/or service providers
- Understand and follow company established standard procedures for file structure and standard drawing procedures for projects. Become familiar with plans and specifications, maps and related material for each project and be able to utilize the information appropriately
- Work in concert with GSE team technicians, use computer assisted engineering, design, and drafting software and equipment to prepare engineering and design documents
- Other duties as assigned or may be necessary
- Provides support to ensure compliance with PHMSA, MPSC, and EGLE Underground Gas Storage regulations. Duties include preparing for and participating in regulatory inspections, monitoring SIMP progress, and maintaining procedures.
- Monitors gas storage performance by coordinating and evaluating: gas storage inventory verification, individual well flow testing, observation well pressure trending, and reservoir integrity maintenance/evaluation activities.
- Maintains accurate gas storage asset information including reservoir performance data, gas well performance data, and operating/maintenance data.
- Develops operational strategies, budget recommendations, and business plans in support the Natural Gas Delivery Plan.
- Ensures regulatory compliance through following or developing policies and standards, regulatory report filing, executing compliance programs, and interfacing with regulatory agencies.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
- Proficiency associated with surface and downhole well technologies
- Overall knowledge of well logging operations and cased hole log evaluation
- Ability to solve complex downhole well problems using existing and new technology for cost-effective solutions
- Skills to lead, problem solve and work well in a dynamic, challenging work environment
- Ability and temperament to establish solid working relationships and maintain high degree of trust with representatives of governmental regulatory bodies such as EGLE, PHMSA and MPSC.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Self-starter and possess a desire to learn, develop, work and grow within a team environment
- Application of utility business model
- Knowledge in utility operations
- Preferred experience in gas storage or gas/oil industry, including background in petroleum, natural gas, or geologic engineering
Education
- Bachelor's Degree in Engineering degree from an ABET accredited program OR Engineering degree from a non-ABET accredited program plus a Professional Engineering license. (Required)
Experience
- 4 - 7 years in Experience in gas/oil industry including well workover operations, well drilling, and well re-entries including familiarity with specific well equipment including wellhead, casing, tubing, packers, cement and other associated equipment. (Required)
- Preferred experience in natural gas storage and geologic engineering.
