Location: This is a hybrid (virtual/onsite) position with required onsite days on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday assigned to the One Energy Plaza headquarters located in Jackson, MI. The selected candidate must be within a commutable distance or willing to relocate (relocation package is available for those that qualify).
General Summary of Job Responsibilities
The Senior Financial & Planning Analyst is responsible for financial statement forecasting for the utility segments (Gas Business Unit) as well as potentially other segments and parent company. The Analyst will conduct numerous scenario analyses and perform variance analyses on forecasts (vs prior year, vs prior forecast, vs budget, etc.) to identify areas for improvement and provide guidance on future trends. The Analyst will work closely with numerous organizations within the company to maintain accurate and valid forecasts. The Analyst will also work closely with executive Finance leadership to make recommendations and support C-suite decision-making.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Conduct numerous scenario analyses and perform variance analyses on forecasts (vs prior year, vs prior forecast, vs budget, etc.) to identify areas for improvement and provide guidance on future trends.
- Make recommendations to leadership to increase profitability, improve customer rate affordability and/or strengthen balance sheet
- Act as a trusted financial advisor, communicate complex financial data, differences in performance, and provide recommendations to senior management and leadership.
- Create custom dashboards and enhance financial reports with graphs, tables, and charts using data visualization solutions like Power BI, Tableau, or FP&A software to easily incorporate data visualization into their spreadsheets.
- Ownership of financial statement forecasting for the utility segments as well as potentially other segments and Parent company. This includes a 2 year forecast that is updated monthly as well as a 5 year forecast that is updated annually or as needed.
- Create management financial reports for the executive leadership team and perform adhoc financial analyses to identify the impact of strategic choices on earnings, rates and/or credit metrics
- Review financial models created by subordinate analysts for accuracy to provide to senior leadership
- Other duties as assigned or may be necessary
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
- Skill in collecting and analyzing complex data.
- Ability to present data clearly and concisely.
- Excellent communication skills both written and verbal.
- Strong analytical ability, including the ability to quickly and effectively analyze, compare, and interpret data as well as strong problem solving skills.
- Highly proficient in Microsoft Office programs with an emphasis on Excel.
- Knowledge of economic and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and procedures, the financial markets, Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) and the analysis and reporting of financial data.
- Proficient with financial management and analysis software (e.g. SAP, Business Intelligence, Power BI).
- Knowledge of the regulated utility construct for Michigan as governed by the Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC)
Education/Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Finance, Economics, Accounting, or related discipline 4+ years of relevant experience
- [OR] Associate's degree in Finance, Economics, Accounting, or related discipline 6+ years of relevant experience
- [OR] High School diploma and 8+ years of relevant experience
