Location: This is a hybrid (virtual/onsite) position with required onsite days on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday assigned to One Energy Plaza located in Jackson, MI.  The selected candidate must be within a commutable distance or willing to relocate (relocation package is available for those that qualify).

 

GENERAL SUMMARY OF JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

This position is responsible for providing statewide technical oversight, operational leadership, and hands-on expertise for heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems across approximately 60 company facilities. The role ensures HVAC systems operate efficiently, reliably, and in compliance with all applicable codes, standards, and regulatory requirements. Responsibilities include maintenance oversight, system troubleshooting, engineering support, permitting compliance, technical studies, commissioning, and quality assurance.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Provide technical oversight of HVAC system maintenance, operation, troubleshooting, testing, and performance across all statewide facilities

• Serve as the primary subject matter expert for building HVAC systems, providing engineering insight and operational standards

• Oversee preventative maintenance programs, inspections, and lifecycle management for HVAC equipment and systems

• Provide 24x7 emergency support for HVAC system outages and critical equipment failures

• Perform HVAC system audits and lead energy efficiency, reliability, and cost‑reduction initiatives

• Conduct technical studies, design reviews of construction documents, specifications, and equipment submittals

• Perform commissioning, functional testing, and quality assurance for new and modified mechanical systems

• Obtain and manage mechanical permits and ensure project compliance with all applicable codes and regulatory requirements

• Oversee mechanical permitting activities for Facilities and ensure adherence to federal, state, and local regulations

• Develop standardized preventive maintenance procedures for all HVAC systems statewide

• Provide coaching, leadership, and technical training for OM&C and NE employees on HVAC system operations

• Deliver hands‑on HVAC maintenance, troubleshooting, and technical support to maintenance technicians and HVAC specialists across more than 60 statewide locations

• Collaborate closely with contractors, Engineering & Design staff, field leaders, customers, and maintenance teams

• Other duties as assigned or as business needs require

 

KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS / ABILITIES

• Thorough understanding of building mechanical systems and HVAC controls

• Strong working knowledge of large‑scale heating and cooling plants, including high‑rise and multi‑building systems

• Expertise with chilled water systems, boilers, pumps, valves, and associated mechanical infrastructure

• Familiarity with HVAC control systems including Pneumatic, Electronic, and DDC platforms such as Honeywell, Andover, Johnson Controls, Carrier, and Trane

• Knowledge of energy efficiency strategies, cost‑effective technologies, and energy management principles to reduce operational expenses

• Ability to read, interpret, and review building design plans, technical specifications, contracts, and equipment manuals

• Ability to develop contract technical requirements, reports, and professional correspondence

• Strong verbal communication skills with the ability to present technical information one‑on‑one and to small groups

• Working knowledge of federal and state regulations and codes, including Mechanical Codes, Plumbing Codes, Fuel Gas Codes, Electrical Codes, Fire Safety Codes, OSHA, and MIOSHA

• Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with diverse internal and external stakeholders

• Ability to travel statewide throughout Michigan as required

 

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

• High school diploma required

• Michigan Mechanical License (Class 1–8) required

• CSD‑1 Boiler Testing License required

• Refrigeration License required

• Minimum of seven (7) years of experience in HVAC system operations, maintenance program oversight, and advanced HVAC troubleshooting

An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered and reviewed.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Systems, Facilities Management, or a related field

 

PHYSICAL / OTHER REQUIREMENTS

• Ability to respond to emergency calls and provide after‑hours support as required

• Ability to travel to and access various facility environments, including mechanical rooms and rooftops
