Location: This position is onsite minimally 3 days a week at One Energy Plaza located in Jackson, MI. The selected candidate must be within a commutable distance or willing to relocate (relocation package is available for those that qualify).

The Principal Data Analyst is responsible for leading the development, enhancement, and maintenance of data analysis, reporting, and requirements gathering. This role leverages deep expertise in specific data domains and organizational knowledge to ensure alignment with business strategy. The Principal Data Analyst serves as a mentor to other team members and provides advanced technical expertise to ensure data quality and accuracy. This position designs, processes, and presents data in ways that support informed decision-making across the organization. Additionally, the role supports the delivery of accurate, timely reporting that drives business strategies. The Principal Data Analyst partners with stakeholders across the enterprise and provides peer leadership and product expertise to the analytics team. They may also assume project management responsibilities to lead teams or large initiatives.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Serve as a subject matter expert across multiple data domains and establish standards for data models.
- Lead cross-functional collaboration to identify data needs, goals, and objectives; drive data investigation and analysis in support of key strategic initiatives.
- Provide mentorship, guidance, and support to team members to foster collaboration and enhance overall team performance.
- Propose, develop, and evaluate innovative solutions for analyzing, associating, and classifying data. Use data insights to recommend process improvements through presentations, reports, dashboards, and visualizations.
- Collect, clean, and analyze data from various sources using statistical methods and tools such as SQL, Python, R, and Excel. Comfortable working in both onpremises and cloud environments.
- Apply understanding of data interactions within applications to troubleshoot issues, identify root causes, and recommend solutions.
- Conduct complex statistical analyses and interpret results from advanced analytical methods.
- Manage multiple projects to ensure timely, high-quality outcomes.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
- Ability to independently manage projects and work with a high level of autonomy.
- Strong analytical and problem solving skills.
- Ability to work with large datasets across multiple platforms and data sources.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong knowledge of data modeling, statistical analysis, and data visualization.
- Skilled communicator capable of presenting highly complex topics to stakeholders at all levels, including senior leadership, in a way that aligns data initiatives with business objectives.
Education/Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Data Analytics, Business Administration, or a related field, with seven (7) or more years of experience turning data into meaningful analysis, presenting to business stakeholders, and driving value for the business. Ability to see the big picture and to focus on details when necessary. Advanced knowledge and experience in topics of data, information, and project management. Subject Matter Expert within the team including experience managing data analytics products and projects as they relate to team goals.
- [OR] Associate’s degree in Information Technology, Data Analytics, Business Administration, or a related field, with nine (9) or more years of relevant experience as described above.
- [OR] High School Diploma, with eleven (11) or more years of relevant experience as described above.
Preferred Experience
Candidates with one or more of the following skills will stand out:
- Proficiency with Databricks.
- Strong understanding of dimensional modeling concepts (fact tables, dimensions, star schemas) and their relevance in analytics.
- Expertise in writing complex SQL queries, including joins, aggregations, and window functions.
- Experience cleaning, transforming, and shaping datasets using Python.
- Ability to develop clear, insightful dashboards and data visualizations using Tableau, Power BI, or visualization libraries.
- Advanced Excel/Google Sheets skills, including pivot tables, lookups, and advanced formulas.
- Recognized expertise in developing KPIs, metrics, and translating data into actionable business decisions.
