Location: This is a hybrid (virtual/onsite) position with required onsite days on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday assigned to One Energy Plaza located in Jackson, MI. The selected candidate must be within a commutable distance or willing to relocate (relocation package is available for those that qualify).

General Summary of Job Responsibilities

The Principal Cloud Engineer is a senior technical leader responsible for architecting, governing, and advancing the enterprise cloud platform across CMS Energy. This role designs scalable, secure, and resilient infrastructure systems that align with business objectives and influences cloud strategy across departments.

Principal Cloud Engineers serve as thought leaders, collaborating with Engineering, Architecture, Security, and Operations teams to define best practices, promote platform reusability, and guide major technical decisions. They act as accelerators—empowering teams through tooling, automation, mentorship, and strategic technical direction.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop and enforce cloud governance models to ensure alignment with security, compliance, and operational standards.
  • Collaborate with business stakeholders and product teams to align cloud solutions with long-term strategic goals, ensuring platform decisions support the company’s mission.
  • Mentor senior engineers and promote architectural thinking, helping teams balance delivery speed with long-term sustainability.
  • Participate in enterprise architecture reviews to ensure consistency and quality across solutions.
  • Lead the architecture and design of enterprise-scale infrastructure solutions across hybrid and multi-cloud environments (Azure, AWS, GCP, on-premises).
  • Define reusable platform patterns and reference architectures to enable self-service, scalability, and secure-by-default design.
  • Drive adoption of cloud-native technologies, including container orchestration, serverless computing, service meshes, and event-driven infrastructure.
  • Lead complex migrations and transformations, such as data center exits, cloud modernization, and cross-cloud initiatives.
  • Guide investments in tools and platforms, including Infrastructure as Code (IaC) pipelines, observability stacks, and platform engineering practices.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, and maintain IaC solutions using Bicep, Terraform, and ARM templates to support scalable and repeatable cloud deployments.
  • Build and manage CI/CD pipelines for infrastructure provisioning, integrating automated testing, policy enforcement, and change management.
  • Collaborate with security and compliance teams to embed guardrails and controls directly into IaC workflows and templates.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

Security & Governance:

  • Strong understanding of cloud security controls, compliance frameworks (e.g., SOC 2, HIPAA, ISO 27001), and audit readiness.

Cloud-Native Tools:

  • Advanced experience with Kubernetes, service meshes, GitOps, and scalable CI/CD platforms.

Cross-Functional Influence:

  • Ability to drive decisions at the intersection of business, security, operations, and software engineering.

Architecture & Design:

  • Proven expertise in designing large-scale, resilient, multi-cloud and hybrid infrastructure.

Platform Engineering:

  • Deep knowledge of building reusable infrastructure platforms, developer enablement tooling, and service catalogs.

Innovation & Leadership:

  • Ability to identify emerging technologies and strategically integrate them into enterprise environments.

Additional Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • IaC Expertise: Advanced proficiency with Bicep and Terraform, including modular design, parameterization, and lifecycle management.
  • DevOps Integration: Strong understanding of integrating IaC into CI/CD pipelines using tools such as GitHub Actions, Azure DevOps, or Jenkins.
  • Cloud Automation: Experience with policy-as-code, automated remediation, and drift detection using tools like Puppet or Ansible.
  • Cataloging Capabilities: Familiarity with building catalog objects in ServiceNow.

Education/Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field with seven (7) or more years of experience in cloud engineering, DevOps, or infrastructure-focused software development roles
    • [OR] Associate’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field with nine (9) or more years of experience in cloud engineering, DevOps, or infrastructure-focused software development roles
    • [OR] High School Diploma/GED with eleven (11) or more years of experience in cloud engineering, DevOps, or infrastructure-focused software development roles
