Location: This position is onsite and may be assigned to any Consumers Energy Service Center located throughout Michigan's lower Peninsula. The selected candidate must be within a commutable distance or willing to relocate (relocation package is available for those that qualify).
General Summary of Job Responsibilities
The Manager of Construction Management is responsible for providing leadership, direction, and oversight for execution of select construction projects managed within the Enterprise Project Management organization. Projects will include new construction, maintenance, system upgrades, and “fix it now” projects to ensure system reliability for customers and provide facilities for system growth in generation, gas compression & storage, facilities, gas and electric transmission and distribution areas. Exposure to all aspects of executing various construction projects. Directly responsible for the administration of other construction professionals responsible for construction execution.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Proven leadership in substation projects, including design, construction, and commissioning
- Comprehensive knowledge of substation equipment (transformers, breakers, relays, control systems) and associated protection schemes
- Experience managing EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) contracts for high-voltage substations
- Ability to oversee safety compliance and quality assurance specific to substation environments
- Hands-on experience with outage planning and energization procedures for substations
- Administer and develop project execution budgets, forecasts and actual spending while driving enhancement of construction management problem solving and process improvement at various levels of the organization using project controls, metrics, and reporting
- Support the identification and implementation of various labor agreements on construction projects
- Provide direct supervision, support, and training to the construction management teams, assess competencies and knowledge of CM professionals and provide leadership and coaching for growth and development
- Manage select initiatives and activities, and liaison to other corporate departments
- Participate in the negotiation and resolution of select contractor and vendor claims. Participate in the procurement strategies on certain projects
- Ensure project development and project execution are aligned through estimating, scheduling, and procurement activities. Assure CM team is working effectively to direct the delivery of projects within cost, time, safety, and quality requirements
- Other duties as assigned or may be necessary
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
- Knowledge of construction techniques for gas, electric, or facilities construction
- Knowledge union building trades; Ability to work with contractors and business agents to assure appropriate levels of skilled construction craft are available. Working knowledge of the National Maintenance Agreement (NMA) or similar PLA’s
- Ability to assess construction sites to identify and mitigate risks
- Skilled in construction claims negotiation and resolution
- Experienced with processes (development and execution); Knowledgeable of power plant and gas compression systems and facilities
Education & Experience
- Bachelor's Degree in engineering or construction management with 4 years of experience in the construction industry working for a contractor, EPC engineering firm, or utility. project specific experience in the field or office for a major project(s) (over $50 million); supervisory experience in project/construction management
