This is a hybrid (remote/onsite) position, the selected candidate must be comfortable commuting at least once a week (or more per business needs) to the Consumer Energy headquarters located in Jackson, MI.

 

We are looking for:  

 

A Manager of Financial Reporting to join our Accounting Policy & External Financial Reporting team, reporting directly to the team’s Executive Director. In this role, you will oversee the preparation of annual and quarterly financial reports filed with the SEC, as well as other SEC filings.  To ensure that all accounting and disclosures included in the SEC filing are appropriate, we seek a candidate with advanced knowledge of SEC & FASB rules and regulations.  This role will collaborate with cross-functional teams including, corporate accounting, investor relations, treasury, financial planning & analysis, and tax to coordinate accounting and reporting processes.  As a result, the ideal candidate will exude leadership, collaboration, and a team-oriented mindset.

Our team has adapted well to a hybrid work model. While we plan to continue a very flexible work model into the future, we anticipate that will involve some level of team presence (typically 3-5 days per month) at our headquarters building in Jackson, Michigan.

We are a team that values and supports work life balance, however, some overtime will be required in order to support strategic business transactions and financial reporting deadlines.

 

We encourage you to apply if you have: 

 

  • Bachelor’s degree with 8+ years of related work experience in the accounting/financial reporting field
    • OR Associates degree with 12+ years of related work experience in the accounting/financial reporting field
    • OR HS Diploma with 16+ years of related work experience in the accounting/financial reporting field
  • Knowledge of GAAP and ability to interpret it appropriately
  • Ability to operate in a fast-paced, dynamic environment, effectively manage complexity and ambiguity
  • Advanced knowledge of SEC & FASB rules and regulations
  • Proactive and intellectually curious
  • Exude leadership, collaboration, and a team-oriented mindset
  • Enhanced technical writing abilities including a mastery of grammar and writing structure

 

Preferred:

  • CPA
  • Experience at a Big 4 accounting firm
  • XBRL tagging knowledge, wDesk experience

 

In this role, you will:

 

  • Ensure that all accounting and disclosures included in the SEC filing are appropriate.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including, corporate accounting, investor relations, treasury, financial planning & analysis, and tax to coordinate accounting and reporting processes.
  • Coordinate the preparation, review, and submission of annual and quarterly financial reports and other filings as required by the SEC
  • Determine and manage timelines for financial report preparation and filing and work collaboratively with cross functional groups to ensure such timelines are met
  • Ensure the timely and accurate presentation of financial statements and disclosures in accordance with GAAP and SEC regulations
  • Perform high-quality detail review of work papers supporting MD&A and notes to the financial statements
  • Demonstrate strong writing capabilities and the ability to author and edit final draft SEC disclosures
  • During non-peak reporting periods, this role will provide expert accounting advice to our internal business partners. 
  • Perform technical accounting research and prepare, or review, clear and concise written documentation of accounting conclusions and accounting policies
  • Monitor GAAP and SEC developments and lead the adoption of new accounting and disclosure rules
  • Monitor and reinforce existing processes and internal controls to maintain the highest standard of quality in financial reporting
  • Recommend opportunities to streamline and standardize existing processes related to external financial reporting
  • Own relationships with key software service providers
  • Demonstrate an aptitude for digital technologies and a willingness to participate in digital upskilling through trainings provided both internally and externally
  • Invest in the development and retention of team members through formal and informal mentorship and knowledge-sharing.
