Location: This position is onsite at the Trail Street Lab located in Jackson, Michigan.  The selected candidate must be within a commutable distance or willing to relocate.

 

GENERAL SUMMARY OF JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

The Associate Lab Technician uses formal technical training, education, scientific principles, and hands-on experience to collect samples, produce data, and follow simple standardized procedures in order to support laboratory and field operations. This position is a full-time chemistry technician role within the Chemistry Department of Laboratory Services, which provides organic, inorganic, waste characterization, industrial hygiene, and transformer oil sampling and analysis services to internal and external customers in a fast-paced environment with changing priorities.

The incumbent is expected to apply experience and problem-solving capabilities to ensure the quality and validity of data produced. Limited problem solving and troubleshooting of processes and equipment are expected, along with limited analytical work, process and procedure development, optimization of standard workflows, and accurate data entry. In a secondary capacity, the Associate Lab Technician may provide field assistance for sampling of groundwater, surface water, and electrical insulating fluids using established methodologies.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Other duties as assigned or as necessary
Ownership of work schedule to achieve daily, weekly, and monthly productivity goals
Assist with process and procedure development, industry code interpretation, and application
Provide analytical support for selected laboratory processes, including sample pickup and intake, sample preparation, and analysis for organic and inorganic parameters using EPA, ASTM, and Standard Methods (SM)
Perform sample analysis using traditional wet chemistry techniques and complete accurate documentation and data entry
Follow basic standardized procedures to produce repeatable data for direct submission to customers or for further analytical work
Provide limited field assistance for sampling of groundwater, surface water, and electrical insulating fluids using standard methodologies
Limited direct customer interface on technician-operated projects

Knowledge of process and procedure development and optimization
Agility and flexibility dependent upon varying department needs
Ability to maintain performance and composure during audits and technical certification testing
Problem solving around laboratory processes, equipment, and specific technical methods
Basic mechanical and laboratory skills with the ability to troubleshoot and apply corrective actions
Ability to interpret and closely follow chemistry work procedures and apply scientific principles

 

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

High School Diploma / GED

 

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE

Performing routine technical or laboratory work under standard procedures within an industry-recognized quality system
