Plant Summary


The Grayling Generating Station plant is a 38 MW biomass-fueled renewable energy power plant that produces electricity. The fuel consists primarily of bark and sawdust from local lumber mills and the non-marketable biomass from lumbering operations.


The power produced supports the health of the forests, mitigates greenhouse gases (is “carbon neutral”), conserves landfill space and supports the electric grid in northern Michigan.  The electric output is sold pursuant to a long-term power purchase agreement with Consumers Energy Company.  This facility can produce enough electricity to power approximately 38,000 homes.  Commercial operation began in 1992.


This position reports to the Plant Manager at the Grayling Generating Station Plant located Grayling, Michigan.


Job Description/Responsibilities

The Operations Supervisor will be responsible to supervise the safe, efficient operation, maintenance and administration of the Grayling Generating Station facility.  


  • Participate in the selection process, and assignment of responsibilities of all maintenance personnel.
  • Provide coaching and performance feedback to direct reports.
  • Train personnel in accordance with Company policies and government regulations.
  • Prepare appropriate reports, recommendations and maintain documentation as required.
  • Supervise the Plant Operations Department.
  • Schedule/plan and manage outages.
  • Interface with regulatory officials.
  • Prepare and submit required reports.
  • Ensure safe, timely, accurate completion of all work orders, Planned Maintenance (PM) work orders, predictive maintenance, and outage work.
  • Provide subordinate training, coaching and counseling.
  • Complete special projects.
  • Write and administer Job Hazard Analysis (JHA’s).
  • Coordinate contract work.
  • Operate the Plant so as to meet all regulatory and contractual requirements.
  • Supervision of 13 operators.
  • Maintaining correct water chemistry.
  • Preparing time sheets for payroll.
  • Scheduling overtime for shift coverage.
  • Must be willing and able to work overtime and any schedule.
  • Must wear all required personal protective equipment.



  • High school diploma OR GED.
  • 10+ years’ Operations experience in Power Industry.
  • 3+ years’ Supervisory experience in Power Industry.
  • 5+ years' Industry-related experience.
  • Basic Computer Skills.
  • Must be able and willing to work any shift schedule, including nights and weekends.


The following skills may set you apart from others:

  • Associates OR Bachelor’s degree in electrical or mechanical related area or equivalent experience.
  • 10+ years’ Operations experience in Power Industry, in Biomass.
  • 3+ years’ Supervisory experience in Power Industry, in Biomass.
  • Management training/skills; able to effectively deal with people, etc.
  • General/specific knowledge of maintenance requirements and practices.
  • Scheduling skills.
  • Ability to prioritize work.
  • Overall knowledge of environmental requirements.
  • In-depth knowledge of all Plant systems, their support equipment, theory of operation, and proper care and maintenance of same.
  • Able to perform job responsibilities of those under your direction.
  • Good oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently toward general results based on policy and precedent.
  • Familiarity with OSHA regulations.

  • Extreme heat: Temperatures above 100 degrees for periods of more than one hour during a work shift.
