The Grayling Generating Station plant is a 38 MW biomass-fueled renewable energy power plant that produces electricity. The fuel consists primarily of bark and sawdust from local lumber mills and the non-marketable biomass from lumbering operations.  The power produced supports the health of the forests, mitigates greenhouse gases, conserves landfill space and supports the electric grid in northern Michigan.  The electric output is sold pursuant to a long-term power purchase agreement with Consumers Energy Company. This facility can produce enough electricity to power approximately 38,000 homes. Commercial operation began in 1992.

The Environmental Health & Safety Manager (EHS) will Manage the execution of environmental activities and processes for the generating facility to ensure compliance with a focus on air, water, waste, spill prevention and permit obligations.   Provide direction and establish processes, self-assessments, and solutions for the generating facility to meet the changing requirements in environmental regulations. Understand the environmental impacts relating to equipment's configuration, testing, and operations.  This role will also support sustainability data collection and reporting as well as direct review of environmental impacts. Ensures compliance with all safety rules, regulations, and supports site safety teams.

Duties & Responsibilities: 

  • Serve on corporate and division safety committees; review and discus safety needs, provide updates, training, DOT, Hazmat, OSHA and related safety and compliance information. Develop effective training programs for managers/employees that will efficiently cover all needed/required materials and reduce travel. *
  • Provide subject matter expertise in Process Safety ensuring industry best practice. Provide assistance to ensure compliance with safety and environmental requirements this may include but is not limited to administering equipment tests, coordinating repairs and upgrades or similar tasks as assigned.
  • Responsible for updating, maintaining and auditing location safety standards and procedures on a quarterly basis
  • Investigate all accidents to determine the root cause and provide recommendations that eliminate or reduce future hazard or risk. Analyze EHS incidents, determine root causes, implement corrective actions and communicate this information for corporate and plant leadership.
  • Track and control inventory of safety supplies and equipment and work with division managers to keep adequate safety supplies on- hand. * Evaluate the effectiveness of the safety program using established goals and make recommendations, and implement corrective action(s) based on industry standards and best practices*
  • Prepare, track, manage and analyze compliance records and prepare all regulatory required reporting.  Must be able to communicate with the compliance agencies regarding technical analysis and reports, information submittals, forms and databases.  Lead the assembly of plant information and documentation that demonstrates compliance and supports sustainability reporting.   Represent the plant during agency or third-party environmental audits.
  • Conduct analysis of plant processes, operating practices, test results, reliability condition and equipment configuration to ensure that it meets the regulatory requirements.  Implement the necessary procedure/process changes through plant management.   Oversee and coordinate environmental activities such as testing, evaluations as needed including contractor/consultant oversight.
  • Understand and educate plant employees on the applicable regulations and the necessary programs, processes and activities that are necessary for compliance.  Lead the identification of environmental impacts from plant modification process.
  • Manage the compliance of environmental regulatory standards and the relevant requirements for the facility relating to air emissions, water discharge, waste management, chemical management and spill prevention/control.    Manage the implementation of the compliance requirement activities at the facility.
  • Other non-essential duties as assigned or may be necessary

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: 

  • Extensive knowledge of OSHA, DOT, NFPA, EPA, other governmental regulations and laws including OSHA 300 logs and requirements by our insurance providers.
  • Must be knowledgeable in regulatory standards and processes for air emission, water discharge, and waste management.
  • Responsible for understanding the applicable regulatory requirements under 40 CFR Parts 60 and 75 for the Continuous Emissions Monitoring Systems (CEMS) and the associated Data Acquisition and Handling System (DAHS), as well as stack emission testing requirements of permit.
  • Knowledge of instructional methods and training techniques
  • Knowledge of statistics, data collection and analysis.
  • Knowledge of federal and state regulations.
  • Proficient in MS Office products.

Position Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Safety or related field required
  • Master's Degree in Environmental Safety or related field preferred
  • Storm water permit certification is a plus
  • DOT hazmat certification is a plus 
  • 4+ year's environmental and safety management experience preferred
