Location: This position is onsite at the Grand Rapids Service Center located in Grand Rapids, MI.  The selected candidate must be within a commutable distance or willing to relocate (relocation package is available for those that qualify). 

General Summary of Job Responsibilities

 

The Supervisor Electric Services oversees substation work performed at Transmission, High Voltage Distribution (HVD) and Distribution Substations as well as the various generating complexes. The incumbent is responsible for the operation of HVD and Distribution substations and associated line equipment in assigned area. Requires planning, organizing, coordination, and supervision of operation activities associated with HVD lines, HVD substations and Distribution substations; and, maintenance, construction and repairs of substations. Plan and manage extensive scheduled and unscheduled maintenance work, construction coordination, and technical guidance substation systems. Provides oversight and direction, and interfaces with multiple workgroups and customers internal and external to the Company. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

 

  • Participate in local problem solving and implement department initiatives. Advocate of Lean methods, identify, and implement ways to improve substation operations in a safe and cost effective manner
  • Coordinate of construction, commissioning, and maintenance activities with customers and other interconnected utilities
  • Respond to substation outages in assigned area or in support of other areas. Participate in On-Call rotation
  • Direct supervision of employees in assigned area including the planning organization, and monitoring of work, education and adherence to Corporate Safety Manual, Procedures Manual, MIOSHA standards, OSHA standards, Business Continuity Plans, Code of Conduct and all Employee Policy and Process manuals. Responsible for grievance procedures, on investigations (safety and disciplinary) and associated disciplinary recourse
  • Coordinate with other work groups, review of design drawings to determine scope of work, commission time requirements, and determine the level of worker required to perform the work. Oversee jobs and must be familiar with switching, tagging and clearances on HVD and distribution substations and lines
  • Responsible to plan, organize, coordinate, and evaluate workplan for substations in assigned area. Serve as lead for all workgroups to coordinate work. Implement and execute preventative maintenance programs; includes research, order and receive materials, tools and equipment for substation maintenance, test and construction activities. Create capital and expense work orders for repair and replacement of substation equipment and documenting test results and equipment data
  • Approve Time Sheets, estimate Straight Time accounting, training scheduling, Read and Sign scheduling/adherence, ARCOS entry, edits and reporting, request and reserve on call resources, Personal Protective Equipment acquisition and distribution including inspection, testing and replacement
  • Conduct regular safety meetings, perform incident investigation and complete necessary incident reports and accident reports; maintain records, prepare and submit required reports for appropriate agencies
  • Provide storm restoration support; includes on call assignments as needed
  • Participate in local problem solving and implement initiatives. Advocate of Lean methods, identify, and implement ways to improve substation operations in a safe and cost effective manner
  • Other duties as assigned or may be necessary

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

 

  • Ability to direct resources in both routine and non-routine/emergency operations
  • Understanding of business drivers and operational priorities. Ability to coordinate activities amongst internal and external work groups
  • Technical knowledge in electric transmission, distribution, metering
  • Read and understand construction prints, be able to interpret electrical schematics, substation drawings and understand substation equipment
  • Knowledge of HVD Switching/Tagging/Clearance procedures
  • Knowledge and promotion of Human Performance Tools to eliminate operational errors
  • Ability to follow a union contract and resolve union concerns
  • Demonstrated skill in transfer of knowledge and employee development
  • Strong communication skills with outside customers. This position requires interaction with dedicated/strategic customers
  • Cascade, Access, SAP, & TOA knowledge

Education & Experience

 

  • Bachelor's Degree in Technical, Engineering, or Construction with 2 years of supervisory, operations or construction experience

 

  • [OR] Associate's Degree in Technical, Engineering, or Construction with 4 years of supervisory, operations or construction experience

 

  • [OR] High School Diploma with 6 years of supervisory, operations or construction experience
