This position is assigned to the Grand Rapids Service Center located in Grand Rapids, MI.  The candidate must be within a daily commutable distance or willing to relocate (relocation package is available for those who qualify).   .  

 

We are looking for:  Principal Program Engineer (Principal Electrical Project Engineer)

 

The Principal Program Engineer is responsible for the engineering and technical disciplines needed to complete a project. The Principal Program Engineer oversees multiple initiatives and works to plan projects, establish project criteria, coordinate project reviews, and ensure the proper implementation of project elements. They will schedule, plan, forecast, resource, and manage all the technical activities aiming at assuring project accuracy and quality from conception to completion. They are responsible for the deliverables of the team and overseeing the work of lower-level engineers and technicians.

 

This position will be working in the Generation Design group.  Generation Design provides engineering leadership for capital projects at Consumers Energy generation sites. The sites include solar, wind, hydro, coal, and gas generation.  Project types can vary from new generation to plant modifications and maintenance.  The department consists of a multidiscipline group of program engineers to support the capital projects.

 

The knowledge and skills involved with this position include but are not limited to: 

 

  • Knowledgeable of the design, construction, or operation of electric generating plants and/or heavy industrial plants
  • Knowledge in project management including safety leadership, schedule logic and implementation, procurement and construction means and methods
  • Knowledge of industry and building codes as they relate to discipline specific design and construction
  • Knowledge of planning and permitting as they relate to discipline specific design and construction
  • Written and verbal communication skills
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent knowledge of design and visualizations software such as AutoCAD
  • Proficient in MS Office, with aptitude for learning new software
  • Organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Strong understanding of GD&T principles
  • Familiarity with rules, regulations, best practices, and performance standards

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited program with seven (7) or more years of applicable experience
    • (OR) Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from a non-ABET accredited program with a Professional Engineer (PE) License and seven (7) or more years of applicable experience

Preferred Experience:

 

 

  • Experience working in power plants and/or heavy industrial setting
  • Electrical project engineering experience
  • Experience in reviewing designs to assure compliance with engineering design, applicable codes, constructability, and industry standards
  • Experience in procurement of engineered material, equipment, and professional services
  • Experience in power systems and/or control systems

 

In this role, you will 

 

  • Prepare, schedule, coordinate and monitor the assigned engineering projects.  Assign responsibilities and mentor project team
  • Build strong partnerships with business partners and deeply understand their business goals.  Interact with clients, interpreting their needs and requirements, and representing them in the field
  • Support the Agile project delivery cadence by helping balance team performance with tight deadlines
  • Develop specifications for the project's needed equipment
  • Monitor compliance to applicable codes, practices, QA/QC policies, performance standards and specifications
  • Review engineering deliverables and initiate appropriate corrective actions
  • Review the engineering tasks and initiate the necessary corrective actions
  • Provide assistance and technical support to project managers and other project participants and collaborate with senior engineers to create more efficient project methods and to maintain the project's profitability
  • Perform quality control tasks on budgets, schedules, plans, and personnel performance and reporting on the project's status
  • Other non-essential duties as assigned or may be necessary
