Job Summary
The Electric Field Laboratory Services Department is responsible for testing, troubleshooting, maintenance, and repair of electrical instrumentation and control systems. This includes the testing and calibration of a variety of mechanical, electronic, and computer based protective relays and substation Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) equipment. These tasks are performed at the Consumers Energy Transmission, High Voltage Distribution and Distribution Substations as well as the various generating complexes. The group is also responsible for the functional checkout and testing of the protection and control schemes during construction projects.

 

Responsibilities

  • Assist higher classification technicians (Journeyman or Senior) 
  • Demonstrates a good basic knowledge of safety rules and conforms to all safety requirements
  • Demonstrates ability to use computer to access: EFL Briefcase, Procedures, References, DMS, safety manual, SAP  
  • Ability to read LVD WD and Fiber Optic related prints
  • Able to perform fiber optic terminating and testing

 

Required Qualifications

  • Must have a 2-year associate degree or 48 technical credit hours as measured on a semester basis in Electrical Technology or a Technical Degrees similar in nature, such as: Electrical/Electronic Technology, Utility Technology, or Renewable Energy type degrees (Completion of a Utility Apprenticeship does not count).
  • Must be able to pass aptitude testing and orientation as developed by Electric Field Lab Technician Apprenticeship Program
  • Individuals must have a valid driver’s license

 

Essential Functions

  • Individual should exemplify safe work practices and follow the company’s compliance standards. 
  • Individual possesses the skills lead, problem solve, and work well in a team environment. 
  • Become familiar with plans and specifications, maps, and related material for each project and be able to utilize the information appropriately. 
  • Utilize effective oral and written communication skills to provide technical expertise to coworkers, clients, and customers. 
  • Planning, construction, and maintenance of Electric and Gas Distribution and Electric Generation systems as well as facilities and ancillary support process for all utility operations.
  • Regular attendance is expected.

 

Hours and Travel

  • Work a minimum of 40 hours per week (45-50 typical) with 95-100% of time spent in field locations.
  • Travel is required to job sites
  • Must be willing to work outside of normal work hours and to meet deadlines and respond to customer emergency activities during any time of the day, including evenings and weekends.
  • Individual must be able to support 24/7 on call responsibilities which may include travel in case of emergencies.
  • Individual may have to work outside of assigned headquarters which may require overnight stays.
  • Individuals must have a valid driver’s license.
     

Physical Demands / Work Environment

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; stand; walk; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms.
  • Must be able to stand and walk for periods of up to and beyond eight hours in all kinds of weather; snow, mud, dirt water, ice, etc. 
  • The employee frequently is required to talk or hear.  
  • The employee must frequently lift and move up to ten pounds and occasionally lift and move up to fifty pounds.  The recommended maximum weight for employees to lift without the aid of other employees or lifting device is thirty-five pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
  • The noise level on the construction site is often loud. 
  • Individual must have the ability to work up to 16 continuous hours during emergent work.
