Department Summary

Electric Journey Line Workers are central to Consumers Energy's operations of delivering electricity to homes and businesses throughout our service territory.


Job Description/Responsibilities

Under general supervision, an Underground Journey Line Worker performs any duties required in the construction of the electric distribution, communication lines and associated equipment.


Key responsibilities include:

  • Regularly directs and leads the work of up to five (5) other employees
  • Determines site and location for direct buried systems.
  • Constructing de-energized multi-phase systems.
  • Terminate in de-energized multi-phase underground equipment.
  • Able to energize and de-energize single-phase underground equipment with another qualified Journeyman.
  • Able to energize and de-energize multi-phase underground equipment with a qualified general foreman.
  • Staking and locating underground wire associated with their work
  • Operate associated machinery/equipment
  • Installing streetlight systems associated with underground plats
  • Performing associated administrative duties and record keeping


A journeyman line worker must be familiar with:

  • Installing, inspecting, removing, operating electric facilities such as transformers, fuses, metering, conductors, etc.
  • Communication lines.
  • Other associated equipment.

  • Must have all the qualifications of a Journey Line Worker including a certified Journey Lineman card (equivalent to 4 years of experience as a line worker).
  • Must be able to complete a pre-employment assessment at the Consumers Energy training facility.


This position is included under a collective bargaining agreement with the Utility Workers Union of America.


Essential Functions

  • Construction of Electric Distribution systems as well as facilities and ancillary support process for all utility operations.
  • Duties and who these individual reports will fluctuate between projects.
  • Individual possesses the skills to lead, problem solve, and work well in a team environment.
  • Individual should exemplify safe work practices and follow the company’s compliance standards.


Hours and Travel

  • This position requires the individual work a minimum of 40 hours per week with most of the time spent in specific field locations.
  • Travel is required to job sites.
  • Individuals need to be willing to work additional hours as necessary to meet deadlines or complete the work schedule.
  • Individual may have to work outside of assigned headquarters to help with workload.
  • Individuals must have a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
