Location: This position is onsite at either the Flint Service Center or the Saginaw Service Center, located in Flint, Michigan, or Saginaw, Michigan. The selected candidate must be within a commutable distance or willing to relocate. A relocation package is available for those who qualify.
General Summary of Job Responsibilities
The Electric Services Supervisor’s work involves planning, organizing, directing, and controlling functions such as quality systems, safety and construction compliance, site readiness inspections, customer interactions, storm management, and the application of policies and procedures. The supervisor initiates and leads project initiatives or change implementation efforts to improve outcomes. This role carries direct responsibility for contractual oversight, including the reconciliation of pay items. Duties include managing and inspecting contract work, coordinating with other utilities or agencies, approving switching and tagging orders for work performed by non-company crews, and verifying field work completion according to contract specifications. The supervisor may lead up to 15 crews in both routine and non-routine tasks performed on Consumers Energy’s HVD system. Leaders are expected to perform effectively and efficiently in routine, non-routine, and emergency situations with minimal guidance.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Resolve internal and external customer concerns to final resolution. This includes property restoration, MPSC complaints, and addressing issues regarding access and easement rights.
- Input materials into SAP for P1, P2, and P3 (non-engineered) projects. Approximately 150 projects are handled per year.
- Manage the scope, schedule, and cost of construction projects; apply a thorough understanding of policy, coupled with leadership skills, to resolve process and construction barriers.
- Conduct regular safety meetings with contractor crews, perform site safety visits, and investigate and complete necessary incident and accident reports. Maintain records, prepare, and submit required reports to appropriate agencies.
- Responsible for work plan adherence, making adjustments to work plans (resources, equipment, materials, etc.), backlog management, and coordinating with internal stakeholders (Planning and Scheduling, Supply Chain, Engineering HVD & LVD, System Control Centers, CEM, Corporate Safety, Union Safety, Community Affairs, Public Safety, Economic Development, Public Relations, Corporate Account Management, etc.), external stakeholders (Contractor Company Leadership, Contractor Crews, etc.), and external customers (commercial, industrial, and municipal). Participate in Daily Operating Reviews and Cross Functional Weekly Operating Reviews. HVD Line Supervisors also coordinate work with Substation Construction, Substation Maintenance, Electric Field Lab, and Substation Operations.
- Lead storm restoration efforts with non-company crews, including utilizing PDMs, conducting line patrols, managing work orders, operating switching and tagging, taking clearances, ensuring three-way communication, and identifying capital work.
- Manage and monitor work performed by non-company crews, including management of contractual items (e.g., time sheets, invoice approval, SAP management, entering TOA outage requests for scheduling, unitizing work, redlining, and ensuring records accuracy). Set up and facilitate pre-bid and pre-construction meetings for large infrastructure improvement projects (Rebuilds, Re-habs, and third-party developers). Provide planning, direction, regulatory compliance, and oversight to ensure completion of work in a safe and cost-effective manner.
- Perform other duties as assigned or as may be necessary.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Basic knowledge and understanding of safety culture, safety management systems, and change management efforts in challenging environments.
- Basic understanding of work and construction methods for electric, gas, and water utility systems, as well as applicable standards and laws related to utility infrastructure operations.
- Understanding of policies paired with leadership skills to resolve process and employee issues.
- Experience with emergent and unplanned service restoration for both HVD and LVD systems; understanding of grid infrastructure.
- Knowledge and application of contract management practices.
- Knowledge and application of work methods, work processes, and related technology in the field of electric operations.
- Knowledge, understanding, and application of planning and scheduling processes (TOA and SAP).
- Skill in transferring knowledge and employee development.
- Skill in negotiating and resolving conflicts with internal and external clients.
- Skill in relating to union employees and leadership.
- Thorough knowledge of company policies and their applications.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor's degree in a business, technical or related field with a minimum of four (4) years of experience leading teams, building relationships and business acumen.
- OR Associate’s degree in a business, technical or related field with a minimum of six (6) years of experience leading teams, building relationships and business acumen.
- OR High school diploma with a minimum of eight (8) years of experience leading teams, building relationships and business acumen.
- Must obtain a Distribution Switching and Tagging Authority certification within 120 days of hire.
- First Aid/CPR & NERC/FERC Authority certification required.
