Location:

This position’s required assigned location is Karn in Essexville, MI. The candidate must be located within commutable distance of the locations OR willing to relocate (relocation package available to those who qualify). 
 

We are looking for: Manager Test and Commission

The Manager Test and Commission oversees the start-up test and commissioning (SUT/C) team, including budget, staffing, general personnel management tasks, assignment of work, and other managerial tasks as necessary to support the SUT / C team and its activities on construction projects. Interface with Project Teams for SUT / C support planning, participate in cross-functional project and process issue resolution, and lead in development and implementation of SUT / C processes and process improvements.
 

The knowledge and skills involved with this position include but are not limited to:
 

  • Ability to apply advanced SUT / C techniques to unique construction project needs 
  • Ability to effectively supervise and develop technical commissioning analysts, technicians & technical specialists 
  • Ability to independently evaluate, select and apply engineering theory 
  • Ability to solve complex problems; taking new perspectives using existing solutions 
  • Demonstrated leadership skills including collaboration with management counterparts in other parts of the organization
  • Excellent communication skills 
  • Knowledge and application of utility trends and the utility business model
  • Knowledge and/or experience in utility operations
  • Knowledge of engineering/commissioning principles and practices across all supported asset classes

  • Bachelor’s degree in technical, engineering, or related field with four (4) or more years of applicable experience
  • [OR] Associate’s degree in technical, engineering, construction, or related field with six (6) or more years of applicable experience
  • [OR] High School Diploma with eight (8) or more years of applicable experience
  • Experience related to the SUT / C function, including functional SUT / C lead for multiple projects with varying complexity, project engineer, electrical technician, instrument programming and/or troubleshooting.

  • Licensed Electrician
     

In this role, you will:

  • Apply knowledge of utility trends and the utility business model to develop and execute SUT / C project resource plans spanning the duration of the Long-Term Financial Plan and update annually. Execute appropriate hiring processes to obtain the necessary resources to meet the plan.
  • Define SUT / C annual objectives which align with corporate strategies and specific EPMES goals and ensure these are cascaded to and reflected in direct reports' annual objectives.
  • Manage annual SUT / C department resource and expense spending within budget.
  • Provide input on the department’s annual budget.
  • Manage day-to-day activity of SUT / C team in alignment with established project schedules. This may include direct involvement in SUT/C tasks, such as Factory Acceptance Testing, on-site project work, and interface with project teams. Track team progress to completion of SUT / C tasks and help address obstacles encountered by the team.
  • Manage monthly personnel-related tasks associated with direct reports' activities (timekeeping, expense report approval, etc.). Ensure direct reports obtain all necessary training and certifications based on work to be performed.
  • Provide leadership in resolution of engineering / commissioning problems and lead in definition, refinement, and implementation of SUT / C processes. Advise management on escalated cross-functional issues.
  • Represent the SUT / C organization in project team meetings when necessary to help address important project issues related to SUT / C work.
  • Create a safe working environment and enforce company safety policies and procedures.
  • Provide leadership to employees with developmental feedback and helping to provide opportunities to those employees to further their development.
  • Evaluate team members skills, accomplishments, and progress for the merit process.
  • Responsible for 4 to 8 direct employees. Currently there are 4 team members for the East Side SUT team.
  • Responsible for the oversight of Professional Augmented Staff required to manage projects. This includes developing the business case for the additonal resources needed and working wth Magnit to find obtain professional staff.
  • Responsible for the oversight of supplemental Start Up and Testing vendors that will support physical work in the field. This includes the development of the yearly contracts with qualified vendors, approving payment of those contrators, and managing interface of contractors and team members/ project members.
  •  Work closely with West Side SUT manager to allow for synergies between the group. Allowing for resource sharing and optimizing the utilization of resources.
  • Area of responsibility will be:
    • Fossil East – Karn
    • Hydro East – Alcona, Cooke, Five Channels, Foote, Loud and Mio Dams
    • Facilities – East Generations sites where PM request support and as requested by Facility PM’s
    • Electric Transmission – Generation Substations only, all other Electric Field Lab
    • Gas Compression & Storage – Statewide.
