This position is the Dam Safety Engineer Lead for Consumers Energy’s 13 River Hydroelectric Generation Dams, responsible for adherence with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) Dam Safety Requirements, Dam Safety, and Public Safety. This position oversees the implementation of the River Hydro Dam Safety Program. Includes dam safety engineering design reviews, Emergency Action Plan (EAP) management, inspection and monitoring reviews, and dam safety risk assessments.

The successful candidate will be expected to work in a hybrid status of reporting to any of the Hydro Headquarters (Cadillac, Croton, Ludington, or Five Channels) with some home office flexibility.



Duties and Responsibilities

  • River Hydro Dam Safety Program management including implementation and oversight applicable Dam Safety FERC requirements
  • Prioritize dam safety projects and align project risks/requirements/schedules with the FERC to ensure dam safety risked are addressed
  • Provide routine communications to the FERC for dam safety compliance
  • Provide direct leadership, development, and supervisory support to a dam safety team
  • Responsible for all the dam safety activities and projects that occur at or near the 13 hydroelectric dams
  • Management of Hydro Generation EAP’s (All 14 Hydroelectric Projects)
  • Act as Project Sponsor to ensure a variety of dam safety projects are completed within scope, schedule, and budget
  • Review engineering drawings and calculations that detail plans and specifications for dam safety construction projects
  • Participate in a dam safety on call rotation
  • Provide backup and support to the Ludington Dam Safety Engineer Lead


Requirements/ Qualifications


  • A Bachelor's degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program as set forth in the Engineers Council for Professional Development. Civil Engineering preferred, other engineering discipline degrees may be considered commensurate with experience
  • 10+ years’ experience of applied engineering experience
  • 4+ years’ experience working with hydro dams
  • Profession Engineering designation
  • Leadership experience
  • Knowledge of risk-based decision-making resulting from risk analysis and risk-based evaluation
  • Knowledge of complex regulatory process and requirements, including FERC, NERC, EGLE, MDNR, and/or other State and Federal regulatory requirements
  • Experience developing O&M and capital budgets
  • Strong communication skills and ability to speak in front of Sr. Leadership, Regulators, and large groups of peers at conferences

  • SAP experience
  • Working Knowledge of the FERC regulations and guidelines
  • Working Knowledge of State/Federal environmental regulations



Hours and Travel

This position requires that the individual works a minimum of 40 hours per week (45-50 typical) with 70% of their time spent in the office or specific field locations. Travel is required to job sites and project meetings and could be significant depending upon location. Individuals need to be willing to work additional hours as necessary to meet deadlines or assist with emergent work. Individuals may have to work outside of assigned headquarters to support projects which may require overnight stays. Individuals must have a valid driver’s license.

The noise level on the construction site is often loud.  Individual must have the ability to work up to 16 continuous hours during emergent work.


All locations, including indoor, outdoor in all weather, working at heights, hazardous work locations in Plants and on the water in vessels. Field operations outdoors and adjacent to, or on water, Corporate offices, generating plants, and at generating assets owned by others on land under lease by Consumers Energy.
