Department Summary

The Asset Strategy Organization is responsible for creating the  portfolio wide and individual asset strategies to achieve the Breakthrough Goals of Safety, Compliance, Asset Reliability and Cost Competitiveness (Customer Value) for our customers for all Company Assets including Combustion Turbines, Coal Plants, Combined Cycle Plants, Hydro Plants, Wind Farms, Solar Gardens, and other future renewable resources (batteries, etc.) 

 

The Manager Asset Strategy - Coal Assets, is responsible for the development of the JH Campbell 1,2 and 3, as well as DE Karn 1, 2, 3 and 4 long term investment strategy by ensuring a consistent evaluation and selection of proposed projects to meet World Class Performance Measures (WCPMs). The Manager is a key contributor to the Generation spend and strategic plans as well as Key Performance Indicators (KPI) goal development.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop prioritized plans for improvement of generating plants and safety and compliance. When emergent (in year) changes are needed, develop and champion the changes to reduce operational risk while optimizing customer value. 
  • Develop and implement safety and productivity improvement initiatives
  • Develop and integrate processes to ensure that resources are optimized to support the corporate business plan.
  • Ensuring the development of asset projects with appropriate costs, benefits and schedule requirements to meet the company goals.
  • Ensuring the development of flexible spending plans to meet changing goals.
  • Ensuring the integration of emergent demands or projects into the strategic spending plan.
  • Ensuring the utilization of applicable industry experience and best practices in the asset planning processes.
  • Support Rate Case, PSCR, and IRP testimony

 

Additional Responsibilities

  • Develop and integrate processes to ensure that resources are optimized to support the corporate business plan. When emergent (in year) changes are needed, develop and champion the changes to reduce operational risk while optimizing customer value. 
  • Develop prioritized plans for improvement of coal generating plants reliability, safety and compliance.
  • Develop and implement safety and productivity improvement initiatives.
  • Ensuring the development of asset projects with appropriate costs, benefits and schedule requirements to meet the goals.
  • Ensuring the development of flexible spending plans to meet changing goals.
  • Ensuring the integration of emergent demands or projects into the strategic spending plan.
  • Ensuring the utilization of applicable industry experience and best practices in the asset planning processes.
  • Support of current year spending plan including Flex List and Change Log activities.
  • Development of Long Term Plan and related Scenarios to support Integrated Resource Planning (IRP).
  • Supports the Electric Rate Case, Power Supply Cost Recovery (PSCR) Plan and Reconciliation
  • Cases, and the five-year IRP and provides witness testimony for all four.

 

The selected candidate will be required to do the following:

  • Further developing and implementing LEAN principles through the CE Way 4 basic plays in an organization looking to become much more mature in this area, and accelerate the pace of these initiatives.
  • This position requires establishing leadership credibility through working relationships with various cross-departmental teams (often at varying organizational levels) and influencing decision making from a non-biased perspective with the interest of rate-paying Customer as the focus (Customer Value, Net Energy Value, Capacity Value, and Plant Reliability), as well as being mindful of the Shareholder and the Company’s triple bottom line; People, Planet, Prosperity.
  • A quality candidate in this role should be able to perform complex project payback evaluation (NPV, IRR) analysis and have the ability to challenge input assumptions and test various scenarios and sensitivities.
  • This position will function as a Sponsor for engineering studies in the project management process, prior to commissioning or approval of a project, also may participate in the project initiation phase and charter/scope development.

 

Required Qualifications

ABET Accredited Engineering Degree

7+ years of applicable experience

  • Knowledge and Experience of the engineering, construction, and operation of power plant equipment
  • Knowledge of the design, construction or operation of power plant equipment.  Experience in plant engineering, plant operations, plant maintenance, project management and/or outage execution.
  • Demonstrated ability to function on a team, participate in collective decision making and support the implementation of an integrated strategy.  Ability to lead groups towards a common goal.
  • Proficiency in MS excel and navigating various database applications and web-based applications (Tableau, SharePoint, BOS or similar) would be desired supplement al skills in this role.

     

Essential Functions

Planning, design, construction, and maintenance of Electric and Gas Distribution and Electric Generation systems as well as facilities and ancillary support process for all utility operations. Duties and who this individual reports to will fluctuate between projects, Practice Areas, and offices. Individual possesses the skills lead, problem solve, and work well in a team environment.  Individual should exemplify safe work practices and follow the company’s compliance standards.  Lead and/or assist with engineering projects to include design, plans, inspections, system planning, specifications, reports, maps, environmental impacts, permits, contracts, schedules, estimates, surveying, easements, data collection, construction observation, and field investigation.  Provide engineering services with accuracy, integrating all applicable governmental and company laws, standards and procedures on time and under budget. Use computer assisted engineering, design, and drafting software and equipment to prepare engineering and design documents.  Understand and follow company established standard procedures for file structure and standard drawing procedures for projects  Become familiar with plans and specifications, maps, and related material for each project and be able to utilize the information appropriately.  Assists in client contact and communication.  Utilize effective oral and written communication skills to provide technical expertise to   coworkers, clients, customers, government entities and the public.  Public involvement may include producing reports, graphics, presentations, and other visual material as well as occasional speaking or meeting with stakeholders. Attend internal and external meetings.  Provide all engineering services in a legal and ethical manner. Resolve all customer complaints in a timely manner. Serve as onsite project representative.  Reviews operating and construction sites to monitor progress and other duties per the design documents.  Regular attendance is expected.

 

Hours and Travel

This position requires the individual work a minimum of 40 hours per week (45-50 typical) with 85% of time spent in the office or specific field locations. Travel is required to job sites and project meetings and could be significant dependent upon location.  Individuals need to be willing to work additional hours as necessary to meet deadlines or assist with storm restoration activities. Individual should be willing to participate in the on call rotation in case of potential storms. Individual may have to work outside of assigned headquarters to help with storm restoration which may require overnight stays Individuals must have a valid driver’s license.
