CMS Energy’s Corporate Tax Team seeks a Senior Tax Analyst with an advanced knowledge of tax, ASC 740, internal controls, SEC reporting, and/or utility tax regulatory principles. The ideal candidate is a self-motivated, continuously improving team player interested in working in an environment with a wide array of specialized tax issues. The Senior Tax Analyst makes decisions and exercises technical judgment within the scope of a system or project and may make final recommendations in support of tax issues of substantial importance to the Company.

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Prepare and review federal, state and local income tax returns, estimated payments and associated supporting work papers.
  • Prepare and review monthly, quarterly and year-end tax provisions and income tax allocation for CMS Energy’s consolidated group.
  • Perform federal and state tax research and effectively communicate findings, including implementation of recent federal tax reform changes, tax planning and state apportionment.
  • Collaborate with various departments to create and analyze the company’s tax forecast.
  • Assist with federal, state and local audit requests related to income, sales and use tax.
  • Employ problem solving/process improvement methodologies to streamline and standardize compliance and accounting activities.

 Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Tax or related area.
  • 5+ years tax experience in a corporate or public accounting environment required
  • Experience with SAP or tax compliance software and provision software or PowerPlant

Overview

The Tax Analyst Job Family is utilized primarily in the Tax department.  Performing all of the Tax functions for the Company including but not limited to: monthly, quarterly, and year-end tax return and statement preparation and analysis; budgeting, forecasting, tax statement preparation and analysis; tax compliance SOX, and other compliance roles; support business decision making with budgets, forecasts, cost analysis, and performance reporting such as KPIs, project analysis, ROI, NPV, and IRR.

 

Nature of Work

The essence of the work that is performed by the Tax Analyst Job Family is a wide variety of Tax analysis, involving following the IRS tax code and generally accepted Tax practices and using accepted tax theory.

 

At the lowest level in this job family, the work performed may tend to be of a routine and less complex nature where the work responsibilities can be proficiently performed after a relatively short training period.

 

At the highest levels in this job family the work performed will tend to be of a complex nature involving knowledge of various functional/specialized disciplines where the work responsibilities can only be proficiently performed after a relatively long training / experience-related time period and often requires an advanced degree.  The work environment often includes dealing with risk and limiting exposure.

 

Leadership, management, facilitation and interaction with senior management will be markedly increased at the mid - highest levels of this job family while the need for direction and supervision will be markedly decreased.  While problem solving and analysis will likely be required at all levels, recommendation and implementation becomes the norm at the highest levels and will often have a major bearing on the company’s business.  In addition, skills such as the ability to think on your feet, composure under fire and effective communication across all levels of the organization and with outside stakeholders become more finely honed at the higher levels.  Regular attendance is expected. 

 

Essential Functions

 

Prepare analysis of planning ideas for management highlighting the risk/opportunities.  Consult with external tax advisors.  Analyze and ensure accurate and timely filing of Federal consolidated return.  Ensure the reporting of International activity into the Federal return.  Review quarterly estimated income tax payment calculations.  Assist with Federal quarterly and annual tax calculations.  Participate in ongoing IRS audits, and all submissions, resolve Federal tax notices.  Assist in yearend FAS 109.  Analyze and report annual uncertain tax positions along with FIN 48 documentation.  Analyze book/tax data for all Corporation entities.  Interpret and apply IRC sections in order to calculate and/or review book/tax differences.  Analyze US federal income tax issues related to IRS audits.  Advise business and functional leaders on tax risks /opportunities on contracts or transaction, both domestic and foreign.  Analyze the impact of future law changes and their impact on the company’s tax position.

 

Hours and Travel

 

Occasional travel to attend off-site meetings, training sessions and travel between Company locations.  Meet travel requirements of the position.  Work a flexible schedule, which may include evenings, weekends, holidays and overtime.
