The Gas Transmission & Storage Mapping Lead is eligible for remote work or can be based in any of our Michigan locations.  Travel may be required to support various training, projects and/or department meetings (approximately 10%).




The Gas Asset Information Department is responsible for creating, maintaining and updating natural gas system records into an Enterprise Geospatial Information System (GIS) Database along with other non-geospatial databases.  The records are utilized internally and externally by thousands of viewers to determine the approximate location of our buried assets, along with key asset attributes such as installation year, size, material, operating pressure, etc. The Teams are responsible for data maintenance and cleanup activities in the different databases as well as supporting other departments in their integration and use of asset data.

The Gas GIS database is the direct source of data used to feed various pipeline construction and maintenance activities like; in-line inspection, high consequence area analysis, risk analysis, leak detection and repair, corrosion protection and regulatory reporting.




This Gas Transmission and Storage Mapping Lead leads a team of Consumers Energy employees and contractors responsible for updating the Company GIS (Geographic Information System) facility data to ensure accurate information and representation of the Transmission and Storage Grid. The Gas Asset Information Department has several Mapping Leaders, and as such, this position will need to align on work management practices, data quality requirements and ensuring consistent application of standards.  The lead role regularly provides input into the effectiveness of business processes as it relates to quantity, quality and financial performance measures regarding gas data management.  The Leader will need to evaluate current processes, eliminate waste and ensure adequate resources to achieve the required performance targets.


The Leader will be required to provide subject matter expertise to support GIS or record related projects, and in some cases, act as the Business Lead role. They will need to research, implement data management best practices in an ongoing employee training and development programs. The leader will partner closely with other departments such as gas compliance, engineering and operations to ensure the data and reports produced adhere to the regulatory and business needs. 





  • Ensure effective and efficient work force management that meets specific performance and financial objectives and targets.  Manage performance and development of direct reports, ensuring they are constantly challenged to enhance their career growth.  Drive team to achieve business plan results and develop countermeasures to ensure success. 
  • Drive development and maintenance of standard work to ensure data integrity for the asset information entered in GIS.  Create and maintain a formalized intake process for construction work orders and driving for a high level of quality of data entry into the Enterprise Gas Transmission & Storage GIS Database.  Validate database is being maintained to a level that drives confidence for use on high priority externally and internally facing reports and gas system analytics.  Provide GIS support with full time contractors for the multi-million/year Maximum Allowable Operating Pressure (MAOP) Standardization Engineering Assessment (MSEA) project.
  • Train team members related to changing work processes that are driven by increasing demands for additional facility and attribute data to meet a growing customer base and regulatory requirements.


Reporting & Analytics

  • Compile the annual Department of Transportation (DOT) report which is a requirement from PHMSA and MPSC.  Collaborate with Transmission and Storage (T&S) engineering teams to ensure the data on the report is accurate and complete.  Report findings to internal compliance and regulatory group for submission of reports.  Compile yearly changes of the T&S system and submit them to the National Pipeline Mapping System (NPMS).  Provide information to the yearly FERC and MPSC 10k reports. 
  • Provide analysis for System Integrity, Compliance/Regulatory, and T&S Engineering Groups.  Calculate regulatory requirements for High Consequence Area (HCA), Medium Consequence Area (MCA), and Class Location studies.  Collaborate with engineering groups that are utilizing GIS data to calculate Risk, Inline Inspections (ILI), Direct Assessment (DA), and Maximum Allowable Operating Pressure (MAOP). 
  • Provide support for System Integrity, Compliance/Regulatory, and T&S Engineering Groups on ad-hoc reports/analytics.  Build and support new solutions utilizing advance GIS technologies through Enterprise, Cloud and Web infrastructure. 


Performance Metrics

  • Monitor and report on GIS and support task performance including quantity, quality and timeliness. Create and implement counter measures to ensure the team is meeting or exceeding performance expectations.



  • Network with multiple departments and disciplines to enhance data quality, adhere to standards, and processes and field activities.  Manage internal linkages with Gas Transmission Engineering & Construction, Information Technology, and field operations to ensure data accuracy of the gas network.  Work with engineering to provide new solutions using GIS technologies.


Strategic Planning

  • This role ensures the long-term integrity and optimal use of the GIS data model, along with aiding in the definition of the 3-5-year plan to enhance the organizations geospatial information footprint. Engaged in planning of the multi-million dollar highly complex transformation to the Utility Network and the Unified Pipeline Data Model, along with the associated impacted systems.




The Gas Transmission & Storage Mapping Lead position may be filled as a Senior Engineer II or Senior Engineering Technical Analyst II based the following qualifications:

  • Senior Engineer II → Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited university, and a minimum of seven (7) or more years of applied engineering working experience.
  • Senior Engineering Technical Analyst II → Bachelor’s degree in a scientific/technical field, and a minimum of seven (7) years of related technical work experience; OR, Associate’s degree in a scientific/technical field, and a minimum of eleven (11) years of related technical work experience; OR, if no degree, a minimum of fifteen (15) years of related technical work experience.




  • Knowledge of the Gas Transmission and Storage Systems and standards.
  • Engineering knowledge, along with data analysis and interpretation, to understand the impact recommendations have to the system and engineering operations.
  • Advanced knowledge of GIS, related programming tools and/or queries
  • Knowledge/understanding of CAD and GIS records systems and applicable standards.
  • Ability to lead and communicate a vision and direction for the team while providing support when needed.
  • Data analysis and reporting, specifically with Power BI, PowerApps or similar applications
  • Ability to analyze and interpret data to draw conclusions and develop actions. This includes development and tracking of data to be able to appropriately understand the work and manage workload effectively.




This position requires the individual work 40+ (typically 45 – 50) hours per week with approximately 10% travel required depending on business need.
