The Gas Distribution Design Lead is eligible for remote work or can be based in any of our Michigan locations.

 

JOB DESCRIPTION

 

The Gas Distribution Pipeline Design Lead will be responsible for the oversight and approval of engineering designs and construction documentation for all Gas Distribution main and service replacements and new business main installations.  This position will be primarily responsible for the emergent workload and further action process, but will also support distribution projects associated with the Natural Gas Delivery Plan (NGDP), formally called Enhanced Infrastructure Replacement Program (EIRP) and Vintage Service Replacement (VSR) program, as well as core programs such as Augment, Civic, Compliance, System Improvement and Pipeline Integrity projects. 

 

This role will oversee Gas Distribution Projects across the Gas Distribution Service Territory and will collaborate with other Distribution Pipeline Engineering Leads to balance workload. This role will also be responsible for leading a team of design technicians to ensure that cost effective designs are completed on time and at a high level of quality in order to facilitate both customer and company requirements.  At times, the workload may deem it necessary to acquire supplemental contracted design support and the lead will be responsible to manage, oversee and approve this work. 

 

This position will report to the Gas Distribution Pipeline Engineering West Lead.

 

Responsibilities include:

 

  • Supervise Gas Distribution Design Team
    • Review and approve gas distribution project designs
    • Provide leadership on projects and ensure balanced workload across the group
    • Represent Gas Distribution Engineering as a technical expert to other parts of the organization
    • Coordinate alignment among the team to foster statewide consistency
    • Partner with other engineering teams to ensure effectiveness of designs and efficiency in their production
    • Review employee performance, coach, mentor and develop designers on the team
    • Coordinate work movement among internal and external resources
  • Contribute to Gas Distribution Engineering Manual Standards committee to improve standards, ensure compliance and promote design efficiency
  • Lead projects associated with process/technical/compliance improvements, including collaboration and communication with other stakeholder groups
  • Create, monitor and report on metrics related to design timeliness and quality
  • Special project assignments as determined necessary by Gas Engineering and Supply leadership

 

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering plus a Professional Engineering (PE) license, and a minimum of two (2) years of work experience in natural gas engineering/design or integrity management

(OR) Bachelor’s degree in engineering and a minimum of four (4) years of work experience in natural gas engineering/design or integrity management.

(OR) A minimum of twelve (12) years of directly related experience in natural gas system engineering/design or integrity management without an engineering degree

 

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS – These will set you apart

 

  • Knowledge of federal and state gas codes
  • Working knowledge of gas distribution system and design standards
  • Effective communication skills
  • Ability to lead a team of highly technical, diverse employees

 

HOURS & TRAVEL

 

This position requires the individual to work 40 to 50 hours per week with 85% of time spent in the primary work location and 15% at specific field locations in the state of Michigan.  This role can work remote however travel is required, but not limited to, job sites, department meetings and field review/support meetings which may take place prior to or during construction.  Individuals need to be willing to work additional hours as necessary to meet deadlines.
