Intern Program Summary

The Consumers Energy Internship Program is designed to be complimentary to traditional classroom instruction and is based on the three core principles of skill development, ability enhancement, and knowledge application.  In addition to working alongside full-time employees within the Corporate Strategy team, interns will have the opportunity to participate in a number of optional events within the program. This includes Intern networking events, company tours, and the consistently top-ranked philanthropic event, the Intern Challenge.


Job Description/Responsibilities

An intern in the Corporate Strategy group will be helping the subject matter experts make the best decisions possible about critical business issues.  In this role, you'll be exposed to a wide range of energy industry issues critical to the company's continued success.  You will be continually exposed to challenges that stretch your analytical skills, creativity, business acumen, interpersonal skills and leadership.  This role will support strategists with the following:

  • Preparing for planning discussions with our senior leaders, including:
    • Plan for the discussion, including exercises & outcomes
    • Agenda development, socialization & distribution
    • Preparing to orchestrate activities & exercises
    • Prep work to organize materials
    • Logistics support for both on-site & off-site meetings
  • Execute the planning discussions and capturing this discussion via notes & actions items in a meaningful way
  • Track results to measure progress
  • Assist in developing standardized work instructions for processes
  • Handle various administrative duties and provide support to staff members as needed


This position offers an opportunity to develop problem solving skills core to a strategy consultant role.  Interns will be asked to explore the most pressing and potentially disruptive forces facing the utility and energy industries today and develop strategies that will aid senior executives in making decisions.



Enrolled and actively pursuing a bachelor or master's degree in the business field majoring in Business Administration, Finance, Data Analysis, Marketing, Communications, Leadership, Industrial Engineering, or a similar field. The minimum GPA requirement for this internship position is 3.0.


The following skills and experiences may set you apart from others:

  • Completed a minimum of two years coursework in finance, business, organizational development or similar fields
  • Demonstrate the ability to identify information sources, gathering and interpreting data
  • Willing to interview company subject matter experts, customers, industry experts
  • Strong analytical, conceptual, communication (both verbal and written), and organizational skills
  • Ability to work and thrive in a team environment
  • Strong problem-solving skills
  • Ability to self-motivate and work productively both with and without supervision
  • Excellent computer skills, proficient with all MS Office applications: Microsoft Word, Excel, Project, PowerPoint and Outlook
